During awards season, Lupita Nyong'o admitted that one of the secrets to her gorgeous (gorgeous) skin is avocado oil. The actress says she likes to keep things "simple, natural, and straightforward," so she doesn't mess with too many products.
Of course, after hearing that Lupita uses avocado oil to get her glowing complexion, I immediately headed to the Google machine to see what it does exactly. Because let's be honest here, when Lupita is going to share beauty advice, we all ought to listen.
Here are some of the (pretty amazing) benefits of avocado oil, and how you can use it on your skin. My guess? It's only a matter of time before this is the new coconut oil.
Okay, so what are the benefits of using avocado oil on your skin? The biggest one is that it moisturizes -- a lot. Avocado oil is primarily made up of vitamin E, which is key in bringing moisture to the skin, as well as rejuvenating it. It's also touted as an anti-aging agent and is supposed to be great for adding shine and, again, moisture to hair. But we're going to focus on skin here, because we want to be like Lupita.
Now. How do you use it? Like coconut oil, there are numerous ways to use avocado oil, but the easiest is to just slap it on your face like you would your regular moisturizer. I'm a big fan of oils -- haven't yet delved into avocado territory -- and the way I typically use them is over my regular lotion, or by mixing my lotion with the oil. (Also, fun fact: If you want that "dewy" look when you're going out, apply a few drops of oil over your makeup. Trust me.)
Another way to use avocado oil is in a mask. There are loads of homemade mask recipes online (just Google "avocado oil mask recipe"), but an easy one is simply mixing avocado oil with a mashed avocado. Remove the mask with a warm towel, and then wash skin and moisturize afterward.
Lastly, you can use avocado oil as a makeup remover. The slippery oil helps slide mascara, eyeliner, whatever off, and it isn't as harsh as typical makeup removers.
At least three uses for one bottle of oil? I'm sold! And if Lupita suggests rubbing Crisco on my face next, I just might try that, too.
Have you ever tried avocado oil?
