Katy Perry claims that after being half-naked and half-dressed in candy-striped costumes and whipped cream-spewing bras for the better part of her pop career, it's time for her to get dressed.
No, seriously. Although she says she admires other, younger stars for hitting the stage whilst scantily clad, she told London’s Captial FM she can't "pull that off anymore." Unlike say, Rihanna, who is three years her junior.
Maybe I’m just getting a little bit older … as you get older you realize, ‘Oh, I don’t know if I can pull that off anymore.’ I mean, if I had Rihanna’s body, I would wear everything that Rihanna wears because she looks fabulous in all of it. But I think I want to keep the attention on my music. ... I don’t want to abuse anyone’s attention when I get it. Because I know you only have it from people for a matter of minutes, and then you have to move on. So it’s important for me to keep it about the music.
Hmm, I think we could all do without the self-deprecating remark about her body not being like Rihanna's, because we all know full well that Katy's got a rockin' body. But the idea that she wants to steer away from the showy, look-at-me fashion in an effort to draw more attention to her music? Cool, I'm down with that! (Though, I have to wonder how much of this is boyfriend John Mayer's influence, eh?)
Seems like the right attitude, as she is approaching 30, and as much as I love Britney Spears, there's something a bit desperate about constantly doing the showboat, highly-sexualized, lots-of-skin look. A little bit of that goes a long way; it doesn't have to be every video, every performance.
I feel like Beyonce is a great example of a diva who always strikes the right balance between sophisticated and sexy. Not that Katy is going to rip Queen Bey off, either! But she's a smart cookie when it comes to her personal style; after all, her style icon is "chic while still being still kind of punk rock about all of it" Gwen Stefani. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if she starts moving in that general direction to soon debut a new, more evolved look we're sure to love.
What do you think about Katy's remarks that she's too old to dress like Rihanna? What sorts of styles would you like to see her rock?
