We see women heavily airbrushed on the covers of magazines and gawk/admire/freak out over images of celebrities who have undergone cosmetic surgery. What ends up happening is those images get translated into "you are not beautiful enough" and "you need to do something drastic to make yourself look better" and sometimes even "you are ugly." There are pills, creams, exercises, and scalpels that promise to reduce the signs of aging and we have all gone a bit too far. And it screws with our minds.
What about looking natural and actually being natural? What about aging gracefully? Forty-seven-year-old mom of two Justine Bateman says she loves wrinkles! Which makes me love her.
Justine (aka Mallory from Family Ties if you are old enough to recall that '80s sitcom) told People:
I’ve never been interested in changing my face. I hear of those glycolic peels and the Botox and plastic surgeries and I am just, like, 'Oh my God,' I just could never do that.
She admits that for certain occasions she loves her eyeliner (me too!), but most days she doesn't wear makeup because she has no time for upkeep so she doesn't bother. "I’m picky about skin care because I hate perfumes or anything that says 'It will take away all the lines on your face.' I don’t want to do that," she says. "But I do use Kiehl’s and this skin cream called Restorsea because it makes my skin look nice and feel soft." (Googling "Restorsea" in 5 ... 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... oh my gosh it's expensive.)
Justine is just three years shy of 50 years young and look at her! She looks incredible and not anywhere near close to 50 ... whatever that means. Perhaps the anti-aging secrets of celebs go beyond yoga; it goes with actually loving yourself as you age -- loving those wrinkles, embracing them. That confidence takes off years.
Love her. Love this message.
Do you embrace your wrinkles? (I'm trying to! I've already embraced my grays.)
