I read, write, and research beauty, skincare and health articles on a daily basis, yet I still have some really bad beauty habits. I can partially blame the fact that I'm your average, super busy working mom, but I have to own up that it's also down to plain old laziness. I've never had a lot of trouble with my skin, so I've always been able to get away with a certain amount of laxness. However, as I get older, I know my laziness will catch up with me, for the better you take care of your skin, the happier it is, and the happier your skin is, the better you look! Right?
So, perhaps by confessing my three biggest, truly awful beauty habits, I will be shamed into stopping them, and maybe inspire you to do a better job than me! Ready?
1. I often go to bed without washing my makeup off.
I know. This is, like, Skin Care Cardinal Sin #1! (THOU SHALT CLEANSE BEFORE BED AND USE AT LEAST A GOOD NIGHT CREAM.) Plus: yuck! But I am just sooooooo tired at the end of the day. I never skip brushing my teeth or taking out my contact lenses, but the whole washing of the face and putting on of lotions and potions for the night just seems too daunting at least a few days out of the week.
Actually, to make this a full confession, I should probably tell you: sometimes I just dab on some night eye cream without doing anything else! Yes, right on top of my dirty face! So bad, I know.
I will say that once I discovered facial wipes, my track record of going to bed with a clean(ish), moisturized face improved. A lot. My preferred method is to use a wipe and then splash my face with water, but I sometimes I just wipe, slather on some night cream, and tumble into bed. It's better than nothing! I really like the Soap and Glory "Off Your Face" cleansing wipes which tone as well as clean your skin ($10 for 25 at Sephora), but there are a zillion different types and you're sure to find a good one at the drugstore. Added bonus: You can wipe the sink with it when you're done. Lazy people, unite!
2. I don't wear SPF every day.
Yes, everyone should wear sunscreen on their face every single day, even in the winter, even if it's cloudy, even if it's winter, cloudy, and you're wearing a hat! I KNOW this, I believe in this, and I want my daughter to follow this. It's not just a beauty thing, it's a health issue! But still. I don't. The problem is that I use a variety of different daytime moisturizers (I'm something of a product whore), but none of them have SPF. During the summer, I'm pretty good about adding a facial sunscreen, but the rest of the time I should either switch to a moisturizer with SPF, or just not be so damn lazy!
When I do remember to do it, I really like Julep's Daylight Defense SPF 30; it's great for a daily wear because the formula is really light and it has a pretty, fresh scent. ($28 at Julep.com) Another excellent, stronger SPF is L'Oreal Sublime Sun Advanced Sunscreen SPF 50+ Liquid Silk Sunshield For Face -- it's excellent, lightweight, and quite affordable. ($10.99 at Ulta.com, or you can find it in any drugstore.)
And, last but not least...
3. I am terrible about washing my makeup brushes.
There really is no quick fix for this, other than to just wash the darn things! If you're not doing it at LEAST once a month, then you're smearing your own skin oil and dirt, plus random bacteria, onto your face along with your bronzer. EW! Here's a great guide for how to wash your makeup brushes ... I promise to do it if you do!
