Confession: I often wear makeup to the pool. Does that mean I'm totally shallow and vain? Well, so be it -- I feel a little better with a little makeup on in most situations. However, I do try to avoid the overdone, Real Housewife of Anywhere / Tammy Faye Baker "full face on" look, which means just a few products to, shall we say, emphasize my natural beauty. You with me?
Here are a few excellent, low-key essentials that will help you feel just a bit glam at the pool this summer:
This stuff is da bomb. I wear "Hibiscus" all the time, but there are eight other shades to choose from for a really nice, barely there coverage with just enough color. The shea butter and botanical wax formula is totally luscious and you don't need a mirror to apply! ($6.99 at DrugStore.com)
I worship all things Kiehl's and this stuff is highly worship-worthy. It's packed with good stuff (like vitamin C) and free of parabens, fragrance, and other additives. Smooth a little on over your sunscreen for added SPF protection and a smoother, more even complexion. ($37 at Kiehls.com)
Ohhhh the irony! I slather myself with sunscreen and then use bronzer. Revlon makes an excellent one that's matte, which is great because you've probably already got a lotta shine going on from the heat and sunscreen. It's very affordable, and I happen to know Olivia Wilde wore it to the Met Gala, so there's that. A few swaps with a big brush and you've got that sun-skissed glow without the skin cancer risk. ($10.97 at Walmart)
Golds and peaches are great for the beach and pool, because they play up that summery, sunny look, so I love the shades Constant Copper and Stay Golden. This eyeshadow has nice, creamy texture but it's not greasy or shiny. ($8.49 at Neutrogena.com)
I don't always wear mascara to the pool, but if I do, I go waterproof because I'm brilliant like that. It can be a pain to get off, but an oil-based eye makeup remover should do the trick! ($20 at Beauty.com)
