I'm Growing My Hair Long So I Don't Look Old

Holy Mom Hair
I hate to admit it, but I've got a serious case of hair envy going on right now. Everywhere I turn, I see all these women with gorgeous, flowing long locks of hair, and I can't help but note how attractive and young they look. (And I want a piece of the prettiness too.)

So that's why currently, I'm a phase of trying to grow my hair out. Every time I've gone in for a cut and color over the past year or so, my hair has always looked a bit too short when I leave the salon. The minute it gets above my shoulders -- it's like I age 10 years and put on a good 10 pounds.

There, I said it. Having shorter hair makes me feel old and fat, and I'm sick and tired of feeling old and fat. And I'm sick to death of having "mom hair" too. (Aren't we supposed to feel good about ourselves after leaving the salon?)

It's not that I don't like short hair or that I don't think it looks good on some people, because it does. However, I do generally tend to think women with long hair are younger than they actually are.

If you put two women in front of me who are the same age, but who have different lengths of hair, odds are good I'll estimate the one with the longer hair to be younger than the other.

And when I look at pictures of myself, I always notice how much more youthful I look when my hair is past my shoulders, rather than above them. And that's why even when it drives me nuts and I get the urge to chop it off, I will never cut my hair short -- at least not any time in the near future.

Ok, let's touch on the fat thing for a minute too. I have a round face, and the shorter my hair is, the rounder it looks. And guess what? Round = fat when it comes to my face. And if my face looks fat, I feel like the rest of my body looks larger too, and then my self-esteem goes straight into the gutter, which is never a good thing.

So in an effort to avoid falling into the pit of self-loathing, I'm spacing out my haircuts from now on and only getting them every other time I go to the salon. With any luck, I'll be able to pass for a 30-year-old by the time summer rolls around.

Do you think you look younger with long or short hair?
