I'm Growing My Hair Long So I Don't Look Old

Holy Mom Hair
I hate to admit it, but I've got a serious case of hair envy going on right now. Everywhere I turn, I see all these women with gorgeous, flowing long locks of hair, and I can't help but note how attractive and young they look. (And I want a piece of the prettiness too.)

So that's why currently, I'm a phase of trying to grow my hair out. Every time I've gone in for a cut and color over the past year or so, my hair has always looked a bit too short when I leave the salon. The minute it gets above my shoulders -- it's like I age 10 years and put on a good 10 pounds.

There, I said it. Having shorter hair makes me feel old and fat, and I'm sick and tired of feeling old and fat. And I'm sick to death of having "mom hair" too. (Aren't we supposed to feel good about ourselves after leaving the salon?)

It's not that I don't like short hair or that I don't think it looks good on some people, because it does. However, I do generally tend to think women with long hair are younger than they actually are.

If you put two women in front of me who are the same age, but who have different lengths of hair, odds are good I'll estimate the one with the longer hair to be younger than the other.

And when I look at pictures of myself, I always notice how much more youthful I look when my hair is past my shoulders, rather than above them. And that's why even when it drives me nuts and I get the urge to chop it off, I will never cut my hair short -- at least not any time in the near future.

Ok, let's touch on the fat thing for a minute too. I have a round face, and the shorter my hair is, the rounder it looks. And guess what? Round = fat when it comes to my face. And if my face looks fat, I feel like the rest of my body looks larger too, and then my self-esteem goes straight into the gutter, which is never a good thing.

So in an effort to avoid falling into the pit of self-loathing, I'm spacing out my haircuts from now on and only getting them every other time I go to the salon. With any luck, I'll be able to pass for a 30-year-old by the time summer rolls around.

Do you think you look younger with long or short hair?

Past a certain age, I think long hair tends to make women look older.

I am also am growing out my hair! I'm 45 and probably still bitter my mom made me cut my hair in junior high!. I have seen plenty of older women with beautiful hair! Madeline Stowe, Courtney cox, Julia Roberts, etc. I was hesitant since I have course hair but with the new Keratin treatments, Moraccan oil and curling techniques, I feel like I can pull it off and make it look smooth!

I think I look younger with longer hair, especially since I also went blond! I had short hair for years but was inspired by Connie Brittons hair. Love her hair, but I wouldn't look good with red hair.

I agree. I'm growing mine out-again. Yes, there are some older women that should not wear long hair, but I think it depends on the way the older woman looks. I'm 53 but nobody ever believes I'm that old. Guess it just depends on how it makes you feel...that's what is most important.

I think long hair looks good on any age! I like it even with gray hair!

I do agree that short hair can make a woman look heavier and that most women look better with "longer" hair.  However on some women past a certain age it can make them look older, especially is it's gray.  Now what that age is depends more on the woman than the age.  I'm 51 and have long hair and think I can still pull it off but I know if I stopped covering the gray or get too much older I'll need to do something different.  Not necessarily short but shorter. I've put on some weight so I'll need to lose that first!

My wife just turned 40 and she wears her thick hair just past her shoulders. I think it looks great!

Down past the back is a different story, but I think most men like it relatively long.

You can't do a hair flip with short hair. ;-)

Im growing mine out, only long enough for pony tail.  I have it to my chin right now, and should be the length I want my fall.

I think sometimes long hair can age people. I would just get hair extensions and then you don't have to worry about it lol :)

Good for you for choosing what works for you. You really don't have the features necessary for short hair, it's nothing to do with age.
