Miss America Contestant Says She'll Get a Double Mastectomy Even if She Wins

Say What!? 10

allyn roseFor all the talk about Miss America being a "scholarship program," we all know that at its essence, it's still more a beauty contest than anything else. And even though the definition of beauty has evolved in so many ways over the years, some notions of it have not changed. Which is why current Miss District of Columbia (and former Miss Maryland) Allyn Rose has received hate mail over her plans for a double mastectomy. It turns out some die-hard pageant fans feel that a woman without breasts can't meet the requirements of the title.

Allyn is planning to get a double mastectomy after her year of service as Miss DC or Miss America is over. Her mom, grandmother, and aunt all died of the disease and she feels as though this is her best chance of beating it. The preventative mastectomy has long been a controversial choice for women. Some people bristle at the idea of removing your breast before there is a confirmed problem. But for Allyn, it's the safest option for a healthy future. “For me, breast cancer is not a matter of if. It’s almost a matter of when,” she told Today.

Not surprisingly, her pageant platform is "Breast Cancer: Planning a Marathon, Running a Sprint" in tribute to her mother (who was a marathon runner). Though, it seems some pageant watchers are not impressed by her plans. Some think she is making up the story to attract media attention, and others complain that if she has the surgery, she won't be able to fill out her bikini like a good beauty pageant contestant should. Unbelievable right? Why is that even a consideration when someone is trying to save their own life?

Allyn should be lauded for her bravery, not harassed for her decision. She can represent a different kind of outward beauty for the women who have endured a mastectomy and for the women that someday will.

Do you think Allyn's choice is radical or brave?

Why does it have to be one or the other? It's radical and brave. She has weighed the options and is choosing the one that suits her the best. It's certainly not my place to judge, and, as long as there's no official cup size requirement for Miss USA, it's not the judges' place either.

I think it's neither.

I think it's a woman who is trying to find the best choice for her life and health. Big breasts fit the stereotype for American beauty, so I can see the outcry from the pageant.

However, eff em. Your life is more important than your breasts or beauty.

yet another reason why pageants are outdated and need to just be done away with. no woman's beauty should ever outweigh her health. ever.

i would be more impressed if she did before "won" and competed .. breast dont make me any more or less a woman

I think it's both. And it's completely her decision.

I agree! I wa braca pos.and I chose double masectomy after diagnosis in one breast. My breast reconstruction is beautiful! I have the T scar as in a normal breast augmentation so no scars show. I have yet to tattoo nipples or sewbthem on but who can tell. Her breasts aren't worth her life, and reconstruction is so advanced just get the T-scars

I totally understand her decision. I have had breast cancer as well as my mother and grandmother. I have tested positive for the gene mutation therefore the possibility of my daughters contracting the gene is 50/50. I have a 23 year old daughter with multiple disabilities and will have her tested next year for the gene. If she has this I will have a double mastectomy and hysterectomy done. She can get thru surgery easier than having to go thru chemo.. I know this from doing this myself and say SHAME ON YOU to those who judge her decision without having been there yourself. GOOD LUCK!

Gees' it's as if they were having their breasts removed. Idiots. It's for her health.

I don't think people should harass her, but people have a right to their opinion. I do not know what to feel about this. I have breast cancer, and having a breast removed was very hard. I dont know if I could do it Just in case. And just because the gene is positive doesn't mean you will get it. Mine was negative, and I still got it. I wish her the best

So having boobies to compete in a stupid sexist pagent is more important than the contestant's health.  Wow.
