Begone, Bikini Season Blues -- The One-Piece Swimsuit Is Back, Hooray!

naomi wattsHey ladies! It's January, and you know what that means ... bikini season! Well, no, not really, but it may as well be, because everybody who's anybody is in Miami or Maui or Barbados or St. Barths (like Naomi Watts in this pic), and so, the point is, it's time to think about what to wear on the beach. BUT we might not be calling it bikini season this year. Because Naomi Watts isn't the only celeb to be recently "spotted" (no pun intended) in a one-piece swimsuit. In fact, famous females from Rihanna to Kate Moss to Stephanie Seymour to Kim Kardashian to Beyoncé have been photographed in one-piece suits on vacation this winter. In fact, so many stars are making the switch, rumor has it the bikini might be ... dead.

I know, I know -- who thought this day would ever come?! For years, the only people who could truly get away with wearing one-piece suits were Olympic swimmer or second graders.

I learned to associate one-piece swimsuits with humiliation when, as a young teenager, I showed up to a popular local pool wearing the same exact swimsuit as one of the gray-haired grandmas taking a Water Aerobics for Seniors class. Never again, I vowed, wrapping myself in a towel and sulking on a plastic lounge chair while all the other girls splashed around all flirty-like in their itsy bitsy teeny weeny whatever color bikinis.

But now that my teen years are far behind me and designers like Malia Mills, Michael Kors, Karl Lagerfeld, and Norma Kamali seem determined to make the maillot hot, I may have to reconsider. How about you?

Will you wear a one-piece this year or a bikini? Or both?

Really? I wear what looks best on me. And that has been a one piece for 20 years.

I don't think the bikini will die just because a few celebs have worn one. They don't suffer in the gym to hide those and under a one-piece. Besides, those same celebs have worn bikinis too. Rihanna was just photographed in one.

I'm a fan of the "tankini" - a two-piece that covers as well as a one-piece. It's my first choice, simply for convenience - a wet one-piece is a pain in the backside when I have to use the bathroom. But I prefer the coverage of both the one-piece and the tankini, because I actually do stuff in the pool. I swim laps, I roughhouse with my son and his friends, I make use of the diving boards and the water slide. Bikinis (back when I actually wouldn't frighten children and elderly people when i wore them) just aren't made for that kind of stuff. I prefer to know that I will be as dressed when I come out of the diving-board pool as I was when I went in.

Seriously? You can only wear a one piece because celebrities are doing it? Don't follow, lead.
