5 Ways Real Women Can Wear Leggings as Pants Without Looking Ridiculous (PHOTOS)

by Emily Abbate on November 14, 2012 at 2:44 PM

Leather leggingsA thousand times we've heard the saying "leggings are NOT pants." We've laughed at celebrities who have worn them out in public, and winced at women wearing them horribly while walking on the street. But I, a little ol' blogger from small-town Connecticut, am here to tell you that times are a changin' and the no-leggings ban is OVER. Yup, dunzo. El fin. Leggings as pants is now a real thing. I swear.

Before you yell at me and throw your half-finished mug of lukewarm coffee at the computer screen, just hear me out. I promise, if done the right way, you can get away with wearing leggings all the time. That is, as long as you have a whole slew of different pairs and they're thick enough not to become see-through over your booty.

Let's take a look at 5 realistic ways to wear leggings as pants no matter your size:

Are you convinced? Are you a fan of leggings?

Printed Leggings

Printed leggings are everywhere this season, and I say they're a definite do as long as your backside is covered. When you rock a pattern and others can see it visibly expand over different parts of your shape, well, it isn't the most flattering. Pair a patterned legging with a long chambray shirt and you're in business.

Not to be snarky but it might have been nice to have "real women" depicted wearing said leggings instead of waifish models. It goes against the whole message.

All of the pics show women with toothpick legs and no butt that's why they can get away with it

Disagree with this post completely. If you have short legs or are even slightly overweight, leggings as pants = sausage legs. Especially the pleather styles...! However, leggings under tunics/longer sweaters are great.

I love leggings but do not feel they should be worn in public(unless you are going to work out) with any shirt that isn't long enough to cover the crotch area because ladies, when you wear leggings with short shirts, your vagina is kind of on display. I can't stand that actually. It looks ridiculous me.

I think leggings with sweater dresses go great.. with cute heels/boots and dressed up of course. Other than that leggings should stay out of public.. no matter what size you are.

I have short, "shapely" legs, with muscular thighs and calves and small knees and ankles. And I look terrible in all varieties of leggings. This is one thing I have lived on this planet long enough to know. There is no chunky cardigan or kicky boot that can balance out my legs. Leggings make me look like an Olympic shot-putter....period. I need volume on the bottom half of my pants or I look silly. Boot-cut yoga pants? Those look just fine. But anything that is fitted on the bottom looks just awful on me....

I love leggings, I live in them because they're wonderfully comfortable.  I just can't understand how people can wear tops that don't go past your bottom with them.  My shirts or 'shirt dresses' have to come down to at least under my butt, or I'd be feeling like my ass was on display all day and I'd never get any work done!

What a bunch of crap. Your examples are so boring. First of all, all the legs look alike, so why didnt you just come out and say the main requirement is to have legs that are three inches in diameter AT THE THIGH!! no less. What a bunch of hooey. :[
