Scrunchies May Be Fashion Gold Again Thanks to Olympics

As the Summer Olympics have captured hearts and spirits around the world, we are grateful for the inspiration, patriotic pride, and sense of oneness in the world they provide.  However, the biggest gift the 2012 games may have given the world is even more significant for many -- the revival of the scrunchie.

Yes, it's true, those adorable, powerful little gymnasts just may have given women around the world the most perfect present -- permission to wear scrunchies again. They sported them during their daring routines, and people took note. On Twitter and in print, fashion followers everywhere are debating if the scrunchie is indeed going to make a mainstream fashion comeback, and more importantly, if it should.

Some are adamantly resisting their greatness, but I for one, say the return of the scrunchie is long overdue.

For the past decade or so, scrunchies have been right up there with mom jeans when it comes to big fat fashion dont's. In fact, women who wear mom jeans typically are wearing a scrunchie too, and let's just say they are not the fashion-forward set. Poor Hilary Clinton was crucified for daring to wear one last year, but it turns out she  just may have been a little ahead of the trend whose time is now if there is any god in hair heaven.

Seriously, scrunchies were the best thing to happen to hair ever. They make incredible, full pony tails, that no elastic band can match; and the pop of color at the back of your head is just so much fun. Not to mention they're comfortable, good for your hair, and you can wear them on your wrist until you need them.

More from The Stir: Should U.S. Olympic Athletes Be Required to Wear Red, White, and Blue?

So it's about time they make a comeback, and key designers like Marc Jacobs are already on board (see adorable one above!). We just needed a little more mainstream push to really get the trend going again, and I think the gymnasts may have provided it.

So dig out your scrunchies if you still have them (I KNOW some of you do); shop for new ones if you missed out on their greatness the first time around. Wear them loud; wear them proud. Just don't wear them with mom jeans.

Would you like to see the scrunchies trend revived?

For me they never went out of style. Then again I've had the same hair-do for the last 30 years (ponytail). And I am the proud owner of 3 pairs of "mom" jeans. Not a single pair of skinny jeans or low-waisted show off my muffin top ones. So here's to my big box of scrunchies.... (mostly handmade, some crocheted, all made by ME

Yes, I'd like to see them make a comeback.  They really are better for your hair.

I wish they would come back! My hair is so thick that I go through the small elastics like crazy. They constantly break and stretch out. I haven't worn a scrunchie since at least the mid 90s. Maybe if they weren't as bulky they wouldn't look so dated.

I've been wearing them at home or for swimming all along. I'd love to wear them outside again without being branded a fashion failure. They're better for your hair and I think they look better too. A nice scrunchie makes a ponytail look finished, unlike a plain elastic.

I had made some beaded scrunchies about 10 years ago that I loved.  They looked great.   I wish I still had them.  I wonder if I could knit some.

I'm with everybody else, I never knew they were out of style. Haha! I used to love scrunchies, I had them in every color and fabric they had. If they became super poplular like they were in the 90's I wouldn't hate it. Lol
