It's an unequivocal bad hair day today as news comes that the legendary Vidal Sassoon has died at the age of 84. The trendsetting stylist passed away after a long battle with leukemia.
A pioneer in the industry, Sassoon was credited with ending the cumbersome beehive and the bouffant hairstyles of the 1950s and bringing wash-and-wear styles to women everywhere (Thank you, Vidal!). He's said to have brought the "bob" to the masses, and to have elevated the profession of hair stylists everywhere.
For me personally, he fueled my earliest hair dreams. I remember watching commercials for Vidal Sassoon hair products growing up with deep desire. I knew if only my mom would ditch the bargain brand, my hair would bounce and cascade behind me like those models.
When I finally got my first bottle I remember feeling sheer joy, and I'll never forget the smell of the stuff. I can't say my hair ever looked like those models, but there was just so much hope in the bottles. In honor of the high hair expectations he set for me early on in life, here are five of those Vidal Sassoon commercials that bring back so many memories:
Embarrassing, but true: I used to flip my hair around in a mirror and practice saying my own thank you to Vidal like the ladies in this one.
Check out this one for spray-on gel. It was so perfect for those big hair days.
I love the slow-motion hair flips.
Check out the INTENSE styles in this commercial:
This one features one of the most memorable product slogans ever: "If you don't look good, we don't look good."
