Cover-Ups: A Summer Style Secret

White House Black MarketIt's time once again for one of my summer style secrets that never gets old -- Behold, the versatility (and affordability) of the swimsuit cover-up!

Every year, I buy a few and end up wearing them all summer long, whether I'm headed for the beach or the supermarket. Swimsuit cover-ups often can do double duty as summer dresses or tunic tops over shorts. They're breezy and cool for summer and best of all, they keep you from having to suck in your stomach all day as you would in a tank top and shorts.

For example, check out this V-neck cover-up (White House Black Market, $39.99). It works poolside on its own, or you can wear it out and about over a cute pair of shorts or skinny capris.

Check out more of my favorite cover-ups of this season after the jump- then tell me in the comments if your cover-ups do double duty.

GapI'm crazy about this embroidered cover-up (Gap, $44.95), and just might end up buying it. The scalloped edges are to die for.

GapDitto on this adorable striped cover-up (Gap, $39.95). One of my summer staples that I like wearing under this kind of thing is an ultra-long white tank top that goes to mid-thigh and functions as a lightweight slip underneath my sheerer dresses.

NordstromSpeaking of versatility, you can't go wrong with this convertible cover-up dress (Nordstrom, $38), which can be worn as a dress or as a long skirt, and comes in several different colors. LOVE.

FigleavesAnd I foresee many an easy summer day in this Venus jersey cover-up (Figleaves, $45).

Neiman MarcusGot a few more dollars to spend? I'm wild about this Carmen Marc Valvo cover-up (Neiman Marcus, $139), perfect as a dress for a hot date night, or over shorts or pants for daytime wear.

BloomingdalesAnd I'd love to add this Nanette Lepore striped tunic cover-up (Bloomingdales, $104) to my closet. Pricy yes, but again, far less than other Nanette Lepore clothing.

What do you think of wearing cover-ups over something other than a bathing suit?
