Dolly Parton's Sense of Humor Trumps Her Sense of Style

dolly partonWell slap my cowboy boots and call me Sally, Dolly Parton is on a roll these days. The 65-year-old multifaceted star is making the rounds with Queen Latifah promoting their new movie, Joyful Noise, and the two stopped by the Today show on Thursday and sat down with Ann Curry. The subject of "natural beauty" happened to come up because, in the movie, Latifah makes fun of Dolly's plastic surgery, a subject Ms. Parton doesn't find taboo in the least.

After Queen and Ann were finished complimenting Dolly's honesty and naturalness, the over-the-top blond chirped that she found herself to be completely "artificial looking." I couldn't have said it better myself.

Ms. Parton does, indeed, look 100 percent synthetic. From her inflated breasts to her thin nose to her large lips to her taut eyes, there's nothing that has taken nature's course on her body. And she looks absolutely fabulous.

I don't think we love Dolly for her cosmetic enhancements; I think we love her because she's so open about them. Whatever negative thing we'd have to say about Dolly, she's already said about herself. And a great sense of humor always trumps a horrible sense of style. She can get away with her sequin suits, hair up to the ceiling, and boobs out to there because she owns it. She werks it like no else can, and before you quip something about her insane look, she'll have already beaten you to the punch with a self-deprecating and hilarious remark.

Dolly's a great roll model in that sense -- her fashion choices may be questionable, but she never second-guesses herself. Her commitment to her look, her smile, and her funny bone make Ms. Parton's "artificial look" work.

What do you think of Dolly's style?

I remember hearing a quote from Dolly Parton about dumb blonde jokes - she supposedly said they don't bother her at all "because I know I'm not dumb. I also know I'm not blonde." I always loved that. I can't stand the concept of cosmetic surgery, but I also try hard not to judge other people and I certainly don't have any right to tell people what thye should or shouldn't do. And let me tell you, people like Dolly Parton make it SOOO easy NOT to judge!!! It's all because she does own it, as you say - and because of her sense of humor.

I LOVE Dolly. And you are absolutely right--I love that she doesn't take herself seriously. A while back, I think it was on Johnny Carson, she said probably one of the my favorite things she's ever said about herself:"It costs a lot of money to look this cheap."

I did note that she looks exactly like she did in 9 to 5.

Sorry, LittleFrogsMA - she looks NOTHING like she did in 9 to5.  She was heavier, her face was fuller, her eyes were rounder and she had a horrible wig.  She definitely looks better.  She should be shouting her doctor's name - so many others who have had surgery look awful - this guy could teach them a thing or two.

Right Venae, cuz she really looked better in 9 to 5 when she was natural, and she was tiny in the movie like in real life. She looked human in the movie, she looks like a caricature of her former self now. Heavy? Really? No wonder women have self esteem issues when other women have a warped since of heavy and tell them they are.
