In classic Real Housewives fashion, the gals got dolled up over the weekend for a holiday party at Kyle Richards' house in Beverly Hills. Sure, their sparkly dresses were cute and the Santa hats added a nice sassy touch. But what I love is: the lipstick.
Red and bright violet shades dominated the shindig. I adore Kyle's deep crimson hue and Gretchen Rossi's bold fire engine red lip. Now I'm feeling a bit inspired to try a fun holiday pout myself!
Ordinarily, I'm more of a muted nude lip kinda gal. But holiday time is the time for celebration, and it looks to me like the Housewives crew has the right idea for a festive seasonal look.
Take a look at these four tips to achieving the perfect holiday lip:
Do your research: If you're someone who stays far away from lip color, then don't dive in head first without preparing. Start with finding the best lipstick shade for your skin tone. Glamour suggests coral-y reds for fair skin:

Estee Lauder, Ripe Papaya, $24
A cranberry or true red for medium skin:
Urban Decay, Revolution, $22
... and deep burgundies or brick colors for dark skin:

Milani, Copper Kettle, $5.49
Try them on: As you know, certain lipsticks feel different once you apply. If you're not into the heavy feeling of a stick, opt for a tinted gloss or pencil for the same fun color results. Not to mention, just because a brand says long-lasting, that doesn't necessarily mean it will do the trick. Slip on a shade while you're doing some work around the house, and see how it holds up.
Use a base: Using a lip primer will lay a foundation on your lips to help the color stay longer and apply smoother. My fave is Lip Primer Potion from Urban Decay ($20, Sephora.com) because it goes on easy and also packs some SPF.
Have fun with it!: This isn't your everyday pout, so enjoy it! If you're as social as The Real Housewives cast, you'll have loads of opportunities to play up your look this holiday season. Mix and match your favorite lipsticks and products to different party outfits for a unique look every time.
