Rupert Everett and Maggie Gyllenhaal Keep It Real at Photocall

Maggie Gyllenhaal"Flummoxed" is the word I'd use to describe how I felt when I saw this photo of Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rupert Everett at the photocall for their new film, Hysteria.

Flummoxed.

Photocalls are typically a time when stars, knowing they're going to be PHOTOgraphed, are at their most glamorous.

And yet Maggie chose what very may well be the most hideous dress I've ever seen (and this is actually one of the more flattering shots of it).

As for Rupert ... is that REALLY you, Rupert? What made you look at that reindeer sweater, baggy pants, and sneakers and think, "Hmm, this will look GREAT in People StyleWatch!"

But the real thing that flummoxed me is that, after staring at this photo for a long, long time, I realized that ...

I like it.

Because in this photo, they look a whole lot like people I might know.

I have lots of friends who would have bought that dress and worn it to a party thinking it looked quirky and cool. And I know plenty of men who would have opted for Rupert's outfit, thinking the very same thing.

In this photo, Maggie and Rupert just look like two parents from Brooklyn, out for a night on the town. They might follow this photocall up with a poetry reading, or a secret John Prine show in some intimate dive bar.

We get so accustomed to seeing celebrities all dolled up by a team of hairdressers, stylists, and makeup artists that it's actually shocking to see them at a photo event looking like ... themselves.

So here's to you, Maggie and Rupert, for having the courage to look really ... well ... bad. In public. At an event with lots of cameras.

Thanks for keeping it real.
