Your Halloween Contact Lenses Could Make You Go Blind

Worth it?
There's nothing that completes a scary costume quite like cat eyes -- or blood red vampire eyes -- or creepy white zombie eyes.

Novelty contact lenses, available over the Internet without a prescription, can make all those things possible, and plenty of Halloween partygoers order them so that they can take their costume to the next level.

But the American Academy of Ophthalmology is putting out a warning this Halloween that contact lenses that haven't been properly fitted by a professional can cause eye infections that could lead to blindness.

Knowing this, would you still wear them?

According to John C. Hoskins, president of the Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology:

Most people believe that decorative lenses don’t require the same level of care or consideration as corrective contact lenses because they can be purchased over-the-counter or on the Internet. This is far from the truth. In fact, permanent eye damage can occur from using over-the-counter lenses. We want to discourage all consumers, especially teens, from buying contact lenses in beauty salons, novelty shops, or in Halloween stores.

Interestingly, many sites selling the lenses state confidently that they are FDA-approved, as if that should allay any concerns about the lenses' safety. And I have to admit, some of the contacts are appealing.

Haunted Eyes

Check out these contacts, for example. These alone had me dreaming up the perfect Stepford Wives costume for my next Halloween party. And they come from a site called Haunted Eyes that has this to say about contact lens safety:

New Federal law mandates all Plano Theatrical Contact Lenses are considered Medical Devices, and as such, require a person to see an eye care professional for an eye exam and to obtain a valid prescription from the eye care professional before being able to purchase said contact lenses online.

Be sure to include your Doctor's name and phone # so we can verify your prescription. (Usually within 24 hours) You can also fax us your current prescription at (678) 264-8016. Once verified, your order will be processed and shipped.

We at Haunted Eyes® truly care about you and your vision. Eye exams are not that expensive and well worth the money you spend, considering the well being of your eyesight. Anyone who would sell you theatrical contact lenses, disregarding the new law, only cares about making money, not the health of your eyes, besides, it's not legal. Please consider that when making your purchase. Consult your eye care professional for advice on the safe insertion and removal of your Halloween colored contact lenses.

However, there are still plenty of places where you can buy contact lenses without a prescription.

What do you think of this issue? Would you wear contacts without a prescription?
