If you haven't heard of Melissa McCarthy yet, it's about time you stop reading those things you call "books" and start watching more movies and TV. The star of the Emmy-winning sitcom Mike & Molly and the hiiiilarious movie Bridesmaids hosted SNL this week and is likely enjoying all the perks that come along with celebrity, like money and fashion lines. Evidently not immune to the fashion bug that bites celebs, McCarthy is starting her own plus-size clothing line.
I've definitely heard worse ideas. McCarthy claims to have been really interested in fashion as a kid (don't all celebs hawking their goods say that?) and was inspired to finally follow her dream when she couldn't find anything to wear to the Emmys.
She told The Hollywood Reporter:
Trying to find stuff that's still fashion-forward in my size is damn near impossible. It's either for like a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker, and there is nothing in the middle.
So there you have it! Instead of looking like a nonagenarian or a teenager, McCarthy has decided to do something about the lack of well-made, trendy, beautiful plus-size clothing out there and design her own collection. Pretty sure that's the best idea I've heard all day, and someone even recommended Chipotle for lunch. I think McCarthy's really on to something.
Not only will she be designing for a niche market, which will set her apart, she'll be designing from a place of passion, not just a place of greed. So many celebs start their own clothing lines, and so many of them are terrible, but I bet McCarthy's will stand the test of time, just like Jessica Simpson's has.
And if there's anything anyone can learn from J. Simps, it's how to hire the right people to take your clothing line from a small casual collection to a $700 million empire. I think McCarthy could have that same sort of meteoric success that Jessica has if she works with a great team. She's childhood friends with famed shoe designer Brian Atwood -- maybe he can point her in the right direction.
If McCarthy's line is anything like the dress she designed and wore to the Emmys, I think she'll do just fine.
Are you a Melissa McCarthy fan? Will you buy her clothes?

i would buy her clothes, if they were reasonably priced. I really like Quees Latifah's line for HSN, but i can't afford a $200.00 jacket or purse. Here's hoping that this one will be more my price range.
I love her and while I am not sure if her clothes will be in my size range (12/14) I hope she does amazing. There is a such a lack of trendy plus size clothes for the modern day woman. You shouldn't have to be skinny to dress in style and feel good about yourself and she gets that. I don't think there is anyone more perfect to do this.
i love her. mike and molly is my favorite show. i hope her clothes are reasonably priced and widely available.
Yeah if they made nice affordable plus size then she may have a better chance at selling them. I was watching The shopping network and Queen Latifah's clothes were WAY too much!
Good luck to her!
I too have LOVED her since she was on Gilmore Girls, my only problem is i wish she would do smaller sizes as well b/c i love her style!
