Missoni for Target Debut Crashes Site

Target Shoppers eager to snatch up the new Missoni for Target collection were met with this image when they tried to access Target.com this morning.

The collection, which debuts today, is so popular that would-be Missoni owners crashed the site!

Are you eager to buy?

At 7:30 this morning, I already had a message on my Facebook page from a friend telling me about the site crash. She said that even the customer service phone lines were jammed! But she didn't even have to let me know -- I had already tried to get on the site myself!

I'm iffy on the women's clothing for myself, but I definitely want to pick up a few of the crazy-patterned knit pieces for my 7-year-old daughter.

Early risers were able to buy Missoni before the site crashed. According to Twitterers:

Even Katie Couric Tweeted yesterday that the line would debut today!

I'm not sure I've ever seen this much excitement over a Target designer collaboration.

You can see more of the 400-piece collection here. Many of you disliked it when I showed you some of my favorites from the lookbook, but I have to say that I'm cautiously optimistic about it. I can't wait to see the reviews as shoppers begin to buy the pieces in stores today and put their thoughts online.

I'm completely blown away about how popular this collection is. I can understand liking a piece or two, but this is insane. Well, at least I know what I'll see at the thrift stores in 6 months!

And @Ryan--sweetcherry has the right to her own opinion. No need to insult someone just because she doesn't care for this collection.

That stuff is cute when used sparingly. I can't imagine actually using all those patterns TOGETHER.

I love bright, bold colors, and Missoni has always been the designer brand I covet, but I haven't--and wouldn't if I could--buy any from this collection. Like the expression goes, "If you put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig." With this collection, you're buying nothing different than all the other labor-made, Asia-imported products that Target sells, only this time they're dressed up with a fancy name. You're not getting anything that's really valuable--nothing hand-crafted by artisans, low quality fabrics--but the companies can justify marking up the prices on the products because it has Missoni's name. The entire hype around the collection is brilliant PR and marketing on the part of both Target and Missoni, but it honestly makes me kind of sick to see the fervor and investment ($900? $2,000? Really?!) that people have put into buying just your typical crap made by the world's less fortunate.

Strangely enough, I didn't intend to "shop the collection" but I stopped at Target this morning after a doctor's appointment because I had something to return. The store was actually quite dead. I saw the Missoni display near the entrance and one other woman was browsing the nearly full rack of scarves and accessories. I debated the black/maroon shawl for a minute and then tossed it in my cart. I saw most of the rest of the stuff as I wandered around...thought most of the women's wear was too busy for my taste, the picture frames were pretty awful, the kid's clothes were cute but I couldn't justify the price for something so quickly outgrown. I didn't see the luggage or toiletry cases because I wasn't in those departments. When I got to the checkout, there was one woman with a cart absolutely heaped with one of everything. Then I said "Ohhhhh..." When I got home, I read about the Target website crash and all the crazed shoppers on the East Coast. Then I saw how much people are charging for the stuff on eBay and wondered if I should go back and buy up whatever was left. But naaaaaaah. I'll just wear my lovely shawl and be happy I got it for regular price...

Lovin it. I personally don't think they would look good on myself but I'm really liking it all. Id also buy it for my girls to wear, they would look darling in it.

@Monzie- I just went and looked on ebay out of straight curiosity and holy crap! I can't believe people are seriously going to pay those prices for Target clothes.....It makes me want to go buy some (there is still plenty at my Target) and sell it on ebay too!
