Kate Winslet generally has a great sense of style -- and her recent appearance at the Venice Film Festival was no exception.

While promoting her much-talked-about film, Carnage, she wore one of fall's hottest looks -- a shorts suit.

But while she looked fantastic (as usual), I'm a little leery about trying to pull off this look myself this season.

Because while Kate can pull off a pair of shorts, even she probably would have looked better in a dress.

And what does that say about the rest of us mere mortals?

Express is making an affordable version of the look -- and I have to admit, I love the way this model looks in these neutral shorts and matching jacket.

And I can't forget how good Julianne Moore looked in this shorts suit in Talbots' spring/summer ads ...

I'm also thinking I'd add tights, which are also big this season -- particularly because in fall and winter, I do not want to be showing off my pale white legs!

Here's Bloomingdales' interpretation of the look with opaque black tights and black booties. Much better, don't you think? (But a skirt would still look cuter...)

Now that I think of it, I'm actually terrified of seeing this look play out in real life this fall and winter. Most women I know would look sort of um, ridiculous in dress shorts, with or without tights.
