World's youngest little old ladies, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, are making a name for themselves as fashion designers, most notably for their high-end label, The Row.
But I wonder if their millions have caused them to become a little bit out of touch with the rest of the world, because The Row's latest creation is an alligator backpack, designed to appeal to a younger crowd.
And it just might qualify as the most expensive backpack ever made.
They debuted the bag at Barneys recently as part of a line of luxury handbags, and two people, according to Style.com, have already pre-ordered it.
That's pretty surprising when you find out how much it costs ...
It costs $39,000.
Yes. $39,000. American.
Amanda Brooks, fashion director for Barneys, tells Fashionista: “I think the bags are triple super chic. Obviously we don’t carry Hermes bags in the store so we were trying to find something that appeals to that customer who is willing to spend a lot of money on a bag that’s going to last a long time and has a classic design.”
And Simon Doonan told Style.com, "To have a bag with precision design that's more considered and beautifully executed is exactly right for now. I spent part of the evening with the black crocodile backpack, and that was a good feeling."
Wait a second. Is it a backpack? Or a date?
At any rate, maybe it is worth the $39,000 -- particularly if it comes with a built-in DVD player, OnStar GPS system, and heated seats as well.
Would you pay $39,000 for a backpack if you could afford it?

i wouldn't, even if i could afford it. but that's easy to say now, having not grown up with any silver spoons nearby... i have to say though... everyone laughed at the 'mary kate & ashley' line when it launched at wal-mart... and now look at those girls! @tinypossum said it best - laughing all the way to the bank indeed.
Hahahaha. . . .
I just had a flashback. Everytime I got a new backpack, my mother would write my name in SHARPIE MARKER, right on the front of it. I hated her for it. I begged and begged for her not to do it, but she'd end up doing it when I was asleep. To me, it ruined the newness of the backpack. Detachable name tags were "too expensive."
I could imagine coming home with a $39,000 backpack, and my mother chasing me around with a Sharpie.
first: NO way! I don't want to pay that kind of money for anything, especially something that will last for less than a year, and ewww...alligator
second: it saddens me to see the olsen girls way of dressing :*( I wish they would dress their age.
How. The hell. Does a backpack. Cost THIRTY NINE THOUSAND DOLLARS.
Stupid thing better have a Cartier watch hidden in the lining...
That is easily someone's yearly salary. Hell no. Not even if I could afford it!
And dammit. . . . enough with the racoon eyes!
I just ordered two for my kids and paid with my food stamps--LOL no I bought my kids their backpacks at a rummage sales (they were both Jansport)
