The moment you've all been waiting for has finally arrived. Princess Beatrice's wild Royal Wedding hat has finally sold on eBay for the mind-boggling price of $130,700. That's the most money a designer hat has ever gotten on eBay (thank God, right?). The winning bidder is not known, but at one point the Australian kids' band, The Wiggles, were in the lead (weird).
Princess Beatrice is donating all the money from her hat to UNICEF and Children in Crisis. She said of the auction:
I've been amazed by the amount of attention the hat has attracted. It's a wonderful opportunity to raise as much money as possible for two fantastic charities. I hope the winner of the auction has as much fun with the hat as I have.
Hmph. Well-said. Pretty classy. Not too shabby for someone who was just a girl with an ugly hat a few weeks ago.
I'm not gonna lie, when I first saw Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie walk onto the red carpet at the Royal Wedding, I thought, "Ew." Both girls' hats were so over-the-top, so ... silly that I found it borderline disrespectful to William and Kate/Catherine/Duchess. And then I thought, "Well, it's too bad that Princess Beatrice has that hat on, because the rest of her look is great." You may not have liked the hat, but you can't deny that her tan Valentino ensemble and youthful, pastel makeup killed.
Now that I look back, though -- now that Princess Beatrice has handled all the criticism of her choice of headgear with such aplomb -- well, I don't hate the hat as much. It certainly wouldn't be my first choice, but if I'm in the right mood on the right day, I actually think it's kind of cute.
She owned it -- certainly no easy feat for a person of only 22 -- and it shows. She hasn't expressed any regrets over the hat, nor given any excuses. She just plopped it up on eBay and raked in a cool $130,000. And now look at this, she's a mini-philanthropist in training. That is attractive.
So hats off to you, Princess Beatrice. You handled the situation better than most 30-something-year-olds would. You have not only proven that you're a nice person, you've also proven that fashion's not all about what you wear, it's how you wear it.
What do you think of Princess Beatrice's hat and the crazy money it made?
