I for one am ecstatic to see the return of the floppy straw hat, last worn by our mothers at the pool back in the early eighties.
I get excited about buying one because it gives me that feeling of being a kid again, playing dress up in my mom's closet. I wonder if Katie Holmes felt the same way when she wore a wide-brimmed white hat during a recent swimming jaunt with her daughter, Suri?
I love her entire poolside look in this photo, and we'll get into her cool, pareo-style cover up in a future post, but for now, let's focus on affordable floppy hats, which you can wear just about anywhere right now.
Check out a few of my favorites after the jump.

A basic floppy straw hat is easy enough to find at a decent price. This straw hat (American Apparel, $38) does the trick and comes in black, white and cream.
You can easily find floppy hats on the cheap right now, too. This straw hat (Alloy, $19.90) is a great price!
Prefer a smaller brim? I'm loving this Small Samara Brim Hat (Athleta, $54).
But I also love the theatricality of this Large Brim Raffia Floppy Hat (Zappos, $66).
This striped floppy hat (Bebe, $49) will definitely get you noticed ...
Anthropologie offers a luxe take on the look with this Grosgrain-Wrapped Sunhat (Anthropologie, $98).
Finally, I'm wilde for this Raffia Sun Hat (White House Black Market, $68), which was reportedly inspired by a "Hitchcock heroine." WANT.
What do you think of the floppy straw hat for summer? Will you wear one?

She need to put some meat on her bones she is so skinny and as for the hat it's cute.
I don't agree that straw hats were "worn by our mothers back in the eighties" - they have never gone out of style! I just went on a Caribbean cruise where I wore a darling, large red straw hat with my red bathing suit and there were lots of women in similar hats - women of ALL ages.
I'm a straw hat wearer. Always have been...but I don't think she's wearing a pareo- I think it's a maxi dress folded down. Look at the front near her stomach and the string hanging from her hip towards the back.
The Hitchcock herione is Grace Kelly, in "To Catch a Thief." She wore a very similar hat in that movie--one of my favorites with dreamboat Cary Grant.
Lol this is funny. I was just givien a wide brimmed hat a couple days ago and thought "when would i ever wear this?!" But maybe i'll give it a try :)
