Joan CollinsSoap star icon Joan Collins, 77, showed up all decked out in a slim jewel-studded purple and lavender Georges Hobeika gown at the annual Vanity Fair Oscar Party in West Hollywood. Well, several hours after her red carpet stroll, that pretty (but totally tight) gown put her in the hospital.
She suffered from what she now jokes was "Victorian swoon." Wow, this is a true fashion victim story. How far will celebs go for a little stylish glitz?
I have to admit this could have happened to me once. Headed to a wedding and wanting to look my best, I somehow talked myself into buying and wearing an intensely tight body shaper underneath my fitted dress. Dear God, too tight! It seemed fine while I was standing up and getting ready, but there's a lot of sitting and eating and drinking that gets done at weddings. And, well, weddings and receptions last a long, long time when your body is stuffed into a rib-crushing Lycra bondage belt.
By the time the wedding was over, I was in such excruciating pain in my ribcage and stomach that I had to rip the thing off in the car while my husband stared in horror. And you know what? I didn't get one compliment on how super-thin I looked that night either! WTH? Not even worth it ... ha!
Joan Collins' dress must have been causing her some serious pain if it actually caused her to start to feel dizzy and faint (because I never got to that point, despite the squeeze). At that point, her husband, Percy Gibson, called an ambulance even though Joan just wanted to go home in their limo (and probably rip open that dress with her bare hands!).
We went to the hospital and they did all the tests before the doctors told me I was absolutely fine and released me. The truth was, I made the wrong decision to wear a very tight dress and had something rather like a Victorian swoon.
The good news is, I am in good health and feel fine today.
I wonder if the EMTs had to cut that dress off in the ambulance. Such a shame to ruin such a lovely gown ... Of course, we're sure glad Joan is doing well.
How far have you gone for fashion? Was there pain or an ambulance ride involved?
