Expensive Lingerie: Is It Worth the Price?

La PerlaConfession: I buy almost all of my lingerie at TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

Over time, I've amassed a decent collection of brand-name lingerie at rock-bottom prices.

But if I'm honest, I've always dreamed of having a drawer full of La Perla and Agent Provocateur underthings -- bras and panties that cost far more than I'm accustomed to paying, like this lovely $230 La Perla bra to your left.

I always imagined that this kind of lingerie costs so much because it feels like pure luxury against your skin -- or better yet, nothing at all.

I didn't think I'd be able to justify the price tag of La Perla any time soon -- but then Gilt Groupe, the invitation-only flash sale site (you can get an invitation here if you want to check it out), had a La Perla sale. With credit I had stored up, I bought myself a bra and and panty set. Total price at deep discount: $150.

Want to know what I thought when I got it?

When the bra and panties arrived, I eagerly ripped them from their packaging, only to find that they felt ... ordinary.

I honestly couldn't tell the difference in the quality of fabric between La Perla and any other decent brand I've found at TJ Maxx or Marshalls.

And that was pretty damn disappointing.

I figured the difference, though, would be obvious when I put them on.

The bra fit very well, which was a nice surprise (it's always tricky ordering a bra from a new brand when you haven't had an opportunity to try it on), but again, it didn't feel any more special on than any other bra I own.

Even worse, it had a scratchy tag right in the middle of my back. All day long, I was scratching and twitching and repositioning, and well ... the truth is, I haven't worn that bra since.

I'd say it was a waste of ... credits, but the truth is I'm kind of glad I got them. I'm now rid forever of the notion that I'm somehow missing out by not owning expensive lingerie. The fact is, those of us who find pretty underthings for under $20 just might be a whole lot smarter than women who are spending $240 on a bra that isn't noticeably any different from the $19.99 version.

Where do you buy your special lingerie? Have you ever splurged on expensive lingerie? Would you?

I spend a lot on bras, but that's because of how hard it is to find bras in my size (38H) that don't cost an arm and a leg. I normally go for Lane Bryants buy 2 get one free sales. Underwear, well, with three kids, there isn't much point to anything besides granny panties. Since there are three of them, obviously my husband doesn't mind!

I like Victoria's Secret items. They have far outlasted any hanes or faded glory undergarments I have. If I had alittle more to spend, I would probably slurge.

Y'all have GOT to check TJ Maxx and Marshalls! You can find far better quality bras and panties there than Victoria's Secret, at Hanes and Fruit of the Loom prices!

Some of my VS bras are great, some not so much. Soma has very good quality bras and always have really good sales as well. They also go up to bigger sizes too. I'm a DD and VS only seems to makes granny bras in them, so I always look elsewhere.

I'm totally into comfort when it comes to undergarments.  I don't care what they look like, only how they fit and if the fabric is comfortable.  I usually wear cotton underthings.

I've also found over the years that the prettiest lingerie is usually the most uncomfortable.  My husband doesn't like lingerie--he prefers me in nothing at all!

I used to shop T.J. Maxx and Ross for special lingerie. Target for everyday, boring, stuff. Then I found Hips and Curves website. YES!!! All that girly stuff in my size and in my budget. Still shopping Target for everyday stuff.

Sadly my lingerie days are behind me :(  buttttttt at one time I spent a small fourtune on it there was just something about having a beautiful set under an old faded pair of jeans and t shirt from good will  that was an amazing feeling...

I shop at Tjmaxx!!!!! it opened about a year ago and i've been going ever since. i never tought of buying expensive lingerie because in my opinion at the end it goes underneath our clothes, unless it is for my husband to see it. ;-)
