Bikini Waxing: Feeding the Fascination With Prepubescent Girls?

homemade hair removal waxThe good news? The latest beauty trend doesn't affect us at all. The bad news? The trend is for girls to get bikini waxes at younger and younger ages. Reading about 12-year-olds getting bikini waxes was not exactly the best accompaniment to my morning bagel, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I mean, a bikini wax at 12? Really?! What on earth do they need those for?

I thought the whole point of waxing anywhere down there was to emulate the prepubescent look. If you already are prepubescent, who the heck are you emulating -- yourself? Something about that just seems ... off.

Most of us would probably admit that a major reason we wax is to please our sexual partners. Keeping everything nice and neat comes with the territory. You see, somewhere along the way, guys reached a consensus that what they wanted more than anything was a bare look, or as close to bare as possible. Suddenly, women everywhere were trimming, shaving, and waxing to look like our 10-year-old selves.

Of course, we also wax during actual bikini season, but I can't see the need for pre-teens to be silky smooth year-round.

I'll admit that part of my shock is probably because I wasn't even allowed to shave until I was 14, let alone wax. And, believe me, I was a really hairy kid, so I can sympathize with the ridicule and teasing that comes along with hairiness. But geez, this seems really unnecessary. It's bad enough to feel that pressure when you're an adult, so it's a sad state of affairs when anybody would encourage a young girl to do this to herself.

In an effort to not be a total negative Nancy, I tried to find a silver lining: at least the early start will make it easier for them as they grow up. Less hair and less pain during waxes, that's good, right?

Nope, even I'm not buying my own silver lining.

At what age did you start getting bikini waxes?

I am very hairy too so I would trim when I was a teen, didn't wax until I was in my 20's.

I live in Huntington Beach, CA. So we are very much about the beach. My daughter is only 3 right now, but I wouldn't mind letting her get a plain ole' bikini wax for the summer time only. No Brazilians. I would say that 13 is an okay age. I don't know, though... We'll see when we get to that point!

I don't wax or shave that area to "emulate the prepubescent look." ~ that's so pervy. I do it to keep things clean and b/c I think a bush of hair is extremely unattractive.

i didn't actually hit full-fledged puberty until I was nearly 17 (how awkward, right??), but I mean, I had a little peach fuzz at 14 or 15, which I shaved. I started waxing at 17 though. I think if my daughter (she's 3 weeks old now, so kind of irrelevant at this point.) hits puberty earlier than me, I wouldn't have a problem with her waxing whenever she asked. I would take her to a reputable professional (probably the gal who does mine), not let her try the whole at-home thing, but I don't see an issue. for me, it isn't about looking prepubescent (ew), its about me feeling cleaner and more confident.

also, girls are hitting puberty earlier and earlier these days, some at age 9 or 10! so, its plausable that a 12 or 13 year old would have enough to wax, if she preferred the bare look.

I didn't get to shave till I was 14 TOO!!! *lame high five*

Ummm... I could see during actual bikini season young girls getting one because bikini's keep getting cut higher and higher and let's face it... as much as we don't want to see a 12 yr old trying to act 'sexy', we also don't want to see the little 12 yr. old with pubes hanging out. That doesn't attract positive attention either.

I haven't gotten waxed there yet... I want to, but I'm a little chicken!

I've never had a bikini wax, maybe i was raised a prude but I always thought only porn stars waxed. COme to find out it is pretty common. I trim but when I was shaved by a nurse for childbirth it was HORRIBLE growing back. I have 1 teens 17 and 15 I told them to trim not shave (during bikini season is their concern)because of the horribleness I went through but I guess if they really want to have a bikini wax then I guess I would let them. They acted like it was pretty normal for girls their ages.

Never have. I don't have a daughter yet but that will be a big fat no until she is an adult. I think it's creepy at any age.

I wouldn't want to be bare down there (it's hard enough right now growing it all back out after it was shaved for surgery) but I do really take offense at the "Keep things clean" statements. You grow a mass of hair on your head, coat it in products, fry it, bleach it, but always consider it clean, right? But the curls on your groin are dirty? Really? Are you that filthy with your habits that they would be? Don't you wash down there when you bathe? If so...then an inch of curls is just as clean as 12 inches of curls on your head. If you don't care for how it looks, that's one thing. But don't try the "hygiene" argument.
