For most of us, the cold weather is finally here for good.
That means it's time to pull out your winter coat -- and if you're anything like me, your coat selection might be starting to look a little sketchy.
If you're looking for a new coat, I have some great ideas that will meet nearly any budget requirement out there.
I also have some important coat-hunting tips.
But first, let's take a look at the coat I've been coveting for two years now -- The Carnaby Coat (Boden, $138). It comes in several different colors and each coat has a contrasting inner lining in a whimsical color. I think this coat is fab.
Looking for something a little more practical? I can help you there, too. Keep reading to see my top winter coat picks.
First, some advice from a seasoned coat-hunting veteran.
- Never, ever buy a coat at full-price. Coats are ALWAYS on sale and it's worth it to find a nicer one on sale than a cheaper, full price version.
- It's fine to buy a trendy coat if you can get a really good deal on it, but you'd do well to invest in a tailored black coat with a classic cut. You can always make it look current with a scarf-of-the-moment on top.
- The nicer the coat, the softer the wool. Keep that in mind when you're looking for deals.
- Buy off-season whenever possible. Coats don't really change much from season to season. Buy a classic pea coat or walking coat in the summertime at half-price and you'll be good to go.
Now for a few examples of great coats. Every single one of these coats is on sale now!
We'll start with this gorgeous Sachi Wool-Blend coat with fox fur trim (Nordstrom, $179.90). This coat was originally $298, so it's an amazing price. Plus, the fact that the trim is real fur keeps it classic and luxe-looking.
Got a limited budget? How about this Style & Co. Military Coat (Macy's, $69.99 on sale)? Regularly $149, this coat is not only a great deal, but has classic lines that will last season after season.
This DKNY Ruffled Collar Coat (Macy's, $227.99) is a fabulous investment coat. Regularly $380, the ruffle on this coat makes it a luxe standout, and it also comes in charcoal and winter white.
I firmly believe every woman should own a red coat, and this Kristen Blake Walking Coat, (Nordstrom, $129.90) definitely fits the bill. Ordinarily $218, you'll definitely have standout style in this coat.
Camel coats are so hot this season, and this Classic Wool Coat (Victoria's Secret, $79.99) comes at a price that makes a trendy coat possible. Ordinarily $109, you're getting a great deal with this one. Be sure and look up Victoria's Secret coupon codes before you buy -- I almost always manage to finagle free shipping and an additional discount on all my VS orders.
I can personally recommend J.Crew's coats, which are always going on sale. I bought a J.Crew coat 10 years ago that's very similar to this Lady Day Coat (J.Crew, $179.99 on sale in select colors) and I'm still wearing it today! What more could you ask for? This coat is regularly $298 and it comes back to J.Crew's website every season, so get it on sale while you can!
Finally, one last gorgeous DKNY option. I absolutely LOVE this Ruffled Peacoat (Macy's, $167.99 on sale), which is regularly $280. *sigh*
One last coat story I can't resist sharing -- I was in need of a new black coat this year, but really didn't want to spend my entire clothing budget on it. I waited and waited and looked and looked and FINALLY found a gorgeous Chaiken black wool coat on Ideeli, the invitation-only shopping website. Ordinarily $600, it had been marked down substantially. I had a few Ideeli credits and ended up paying $77 on it! It is GORGEOUS and looks like a $600 coat and I am so pleased with it. Invitation-only sites like Ideeli, Gilt Groupe, and Rue La La regularly have great coat sales, so be sure and join up (it's free!) to get in on the action. If you need an invitation, I've got 'em: Just click on the links for Ideeli, Gilt Groupe, and Rue La La to join!
In the meantime, see any coats you like?
