Even though the economy is supposed to be improving, here's one economic stat that says it isn't: High-end resale boutiques are popping up all over the place.
Here's how they work: People bring in their shoes, purses, and clothes and can either sell them outright to the store, or put them on consignment, where they get about 40 percent of the purchase price when their items sell.
Yes, that's right: rich people are selling their Versace and Jimmy Choos. And buying different ones ... used. Who would have thought? I mean, God forbid they stalk Target and H&M the day their designer collections come out like the rest of us, and yet, they still need to look fancy. Can you imagine the humiliation if someone showed up to, say, a Junior League gala in something another member had consigned the week before? Quelle horreur!
There's an upside to this for us mere mortals:
They are a great source of cheap, still-fashionable designer clothes for the rest of us. See, these stores are far above the usual resale shop: the clothes are current, in good repair, and lack that disgusting, musty smell that you get in, say, a Salvation Army store. Many are organized like cute boutiques instead of the crowded racks at thrift shops.
Of course, the real fashion snobs are still going to look down their noses at you if you shop at these places because the clothes are past-season, and there are no plus sizes carried to speak of. On the other hand, what a way to make the recession work for you: When the wealthy are (relatively) suffering, you can scam some of their best stuff without needing to have a rich friend who is your size. We're talking designer stuff for about half off the original price; some places are even cheaper than that.
Would you try an upscale resale store?

I've never been to an adult re-sale shop before, and I doubt I will go to one. Most of the stuff being designer label, is still too expensive for me. I prefer to buy new clothes without the fancy label for really good prices at JC Penney, Charlotte Russe, and Forever 21.
I have been to children consignment stores, and let me tell you, never again! They were selling used feet pajamas for 4+ dollars! Not to mention they had a Wal-Mart brand baby girl dress for sale at 10 dollars. I get great deals on baby clothes scanning Craigslist.
Oh i love thrift stores! I volunteer at one every saterday. You never know what you're gonna find. I do shop at thrift stores, some are more expensive than others but always worth the trip, always find some tresures. I dont care if people are too good for it, alot of wealthy people come into our store so I guess thrift stores are just not for everyone.
Consignment shops are different from trift shops. Our trift shops gives there profits to the local hospital and the cosignment shopes are full of snobs! They're way over priced and that usually because the people that take their stuff there think they're hot stuff so their stuff is worth more......I dont do consignment shops, too expensive and thats because the store and people that brought it in get money.....
This happened to me the other day! I was at an Eagles tailgate and I saw a girl walking around wearing a green Victoria's Secret PINK puffy vest I'd sold to a consignment shop the week earlier! It was a few years old, so I knew it had to be mine (plus I bought it at a specialty store on the west coast). I wasn't embarrassed for her, but I gave her the "I know" look. haha
I love consignment shopping. Real Consignment shopping! I don't know about any one else, but our Goodwill and Salvation Army stores look like a store in the mall. The prices are very high and most of our Goodwill's sell very few donated items, there all brand new. However I do love my local resale, thrift (charity stores) and consignment shops. Like the poster above stated, each shop is different. I've been in the high dollar designer stores and the stores that take every brand. Let's face it, there is a store for every season and reason. I doubt you will ever find a person that purchase nothing but designer brands (YSL) at a shop that carries every brand. It would be an embrassment to them. Regardless if they have money or not. I just think that it's great that there is a store for every type of person. Also, these small business owners are putting people to work and saving families money. Don't get me wrong, I hate when I go to buy my son clothing at a resale kids store that sells target for 10 bucks. I can walk across the street to target and maybe find it cheaper. But, on the same note I have found him brand new shoes for 3 bucks. I hope every one will give resale/consignment/non profit stores a second glance. YOU MIGHT BE SUPRISED!!!
We have one in my area, but I have never been to it.
Hi all, Out here on the West Coast, buying used does not have the same stigma it used to. Not all consignment stores are created equal. It depends on what kind of people are running the store, where its located, and what kind of clientele they are catering to. If your local resale stores are doing things right, the merchandise is priced to sell. Who wants to see the same stuff on the racks months later! The general rule on pricing seems to be 1/3 for clothing, unless its something very desirable. We cater to the average family in the USA. We only accept the items into consignment if they are clean, free of holes, stains, and excessive wear. They also need to be in current style, otherwise they don't sell. We do sell basic brands to high end brands. They are just priced accordingly. You will pay more for Gap pajamas than you will for Carters. Under size 2, and I drop the price, cause we get soooooooooo many in! Lots of factors! I would say to volunteer for a day. You will see how much work goes into getting just one consignors items out on the floor. Maybe your shop just needs some help! I pay my volunteers in clothing or Corvallis Hours (a local currency) I say that you should give your local resale store a try! You may be hooked for life!!! Julianna Replay Children's Wear
