How to Wear Grown-Up Pigtails

9

Pigtails are not just for 3-year-olds and Pippi Longstocking. Worn the right way, the pigtail can be a look that is grown up, indeed.

Madonna was spotted the other day in London going out to dinner in pig tails and though she took some heat for it from the Daily Mail -- "Madonna looked like she was trying to turn back the clock as she stepped out for dinner in London last night wearing a hair style preferred by little girls." -- she looked pretty good to me.

There is an art to wearing pigtails and people like Holly Madison, Marilyn Monroe and many, many models pull it off quite well. Bonus points: men love it.

But what about you? How do you wear a hairstyle that you left in the third grade?

Some tips:

  • Step 1: Start low. Do not attempt high pigtails or you will just look silly. Give yourself a nice deep part and brush the two sides well.
  • Step 2: Divide evenly and secure just below the back of the ears with an elastic tie.
  • Step 3: Accessorize: Depending on your plans you could add a flower tucked behind one ear. A more conservative event might call for a headband over the top of your head.
  • Step 4: Wrap it up: If you used plain elastics, take a strand of hair and wrap it around the elastics. Secure with a bobby pin. Do the same on the other side.

Some tips: Depending on the length of your hair, try braiding the remaining hair. You don't need long hair to make it work. Even chin length hair can make two cute pig tails. It is a great mom style and easy enough to do in the morning when you don't feel like washing.

Voila! Grown-up pigtails that don't make you look like Dorothy's understudy in the Wizard of Oz.

Do you wear pigtails?

Your right about the man thing. My husband *loves* pigtails. I rarely wear them, though, because I have weird cowlicks all over the back of my head that make it difficult to part evenly. My 61 year old mother, however, rocks pigtails and a cowboy hat whenever she does yard work or goes to the beach. It's totally adorable!
