While in New York a few weeks ago, I met a woman who lives in the building across the street from J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyons.
"Every single day, she's wearing something sparkly," she told me. "It doesn't matter what she has on -- somewhere, there's sparkle."
Is it any wonder that J.Crew seems to be doing the casual sequins look for fall better than just about anyone? I love the thought of throwing on a worn denim jacket over a sequined skirt. I also love the fact that all those sequined tanks I bought last fall are still good for another season!
Read on to see some fabulous interpretations of the sequins-by-day trend -- and I'll show you some of my favorite affordable sequined picks!
I love Neiman Marcus's recent take on what it calls "all-occasion sequins." I can almost never afford Neiman's prices, but the NM catalog's pictures give me a good idea of how to wear my more affordable finds.
If you're too conservative for a skirt or top made entirely of sequins, look for pieces with sequin accents, like a pretty top or clutch purse.
There's something about sequins with denim that I find to be so cool. I'm loving this silver sequin vest.
And for those of you who are more daring, how about some patterned sequin leggings? I would totally try this look at a party or date night. Haute!
And now, check out my top picks for affordable sequined clothing. Right off the bat, I advise you to look for looser-fitting sequined pieces to do this look right. Too many brands make their sequined pieces skin-tight, which really looks cheap ...
I'm crazy about this Michael Kors sequined camo tank (Michael Kors, $79.50) as a layering piece. It would look great on its own with jeans or add some sparkle to tailored pants and a black blazer.
If you can handle the length (or lack therof), this Guess Suzi Sequin Mini Skirt (Guess, $49) is a fantastic price and looks like the far more expensive J.Crew version. I might try this skirt with black tights ...
For just a hint of sparkle on a shoestring budget, try working this sequin mesh scarf (Charlotte Russe, $6.50) into your outfit. It also comes in black.
This A/Wear Sequin Shift Dress (ASOS, $84.25) is my new obsession. Sure it looks dressy here, but imagine it with a denim jacket ... perfectly cool!
Feeling a little more low-key? How about this sweet Art Opening Skirt (Modcloth, $49.99), which features just a few well-placed sequins and beads?
And now for another skinny scarf (Newport News, $24) option, just because it's so inexpensive and could be worn a number of ways.
I can't afford it, but I can want it bad ... this is the plaza sequin amanda bag (Kate Spade, $275).
This Betsey Johnson Sequined Crossbody Clutch (Nordstrom, $64.90 on sale) is also fab, it comes in pink, black, and gold, and it's a much nicer price!
Finally, this awesome sequined mesh shrug cardigan (Newport News, $49) is available in gold and silver and you could wear it with practically anything! Fantastic!
Will you rock the sequins this fall?

I would not do a solid sequin piece, but that modcloth skirt is SUPER cute!!
I think the all-over sequin look will always look too dressy in the daytime, unless you work the stage in Vegas. And throwing a denim jacket over it just makes it look like you spent all your money on the dress and had none left for a decent coat. I know, I know, I need to start saying what I really think, and not hold back. ;D
I'm glad sequins are still in, though, because I've got several pieces with sequins as accents that I'll continue to wear. Okay, I'd wear them anyway even if it gave me away as being so 2008.
When I think of sequins I think vegas show girls or new year party.
I would totally do all-sequins by day, particularly a sequined skirt paired with something ultra casual. I think it's a nice surprise. You're expecting to see them at night, so to see them worn casual by day is really fun. It's my personality, though. It's definitely not for everyone!
LOL, you should check out all the photos of Josh and Katie Holmes on JCrew.com (under The Romantics) photo shoot). He and Katie look like a little more than friends in those pics, if you ask me! :D
It's a great look for a party!
Okay first photo kids, not going to stay that skinny eating all those cupcakes!
