There's good news for all of you who've taken the plunge already and bought a pair or two of dress shorts.
This fall, they're hotter than ever!
As you might remember, Julia Roberts turned up at the Eat, Pray, Love premiere last week in black dress shorts and looked absolutely fantastic.
If you ask me, they're one of the best pieces you can have in your closet right now as you transition from summer into fall.
Wondering how to wear your dress shorts?
Personally, I love J. Crew's take on the trend, pictured on your left. The pinstriped shorts are a nice surprise, while the denim shirt and layering tee keep the blazer looking casual, and not too stuffy.

When trying to decide how to wear dress shorts, it might be helpful to think of them as a skirt of the same length. You can go bare legged or wear them with tights- The look for fall is opaque, as opposed to sheer hosiery, although you can still get away with sheer black hose beneath your dress shorts while the weather's still warm.
Here's another smart warm-weather look from J. Crew's August catalog. What I love about dress shorts is that you can layer other pieces over them, hiding your midriff- but since your legs are exposed, the effect is still slimming.
Don't want to expose your bare legs to the world? No problem!
Add tights, a dressier shirt and snappy blazer and you've got a look that's appropriate for many workplaces. You can find this entire outfit in Nordstrom's latest catalog.
Nordstrom tied in a couple of trends with this look, putting together gray dress shorts, opaque tights and a to-die-for gray military jacket. This outfit is so smart and stylish.

These are a few online options-- but to be honest, I advise going to a mall or department store and trying on dress shorts to find the right ones for you. Shorts (and pants, for that matter) are a tough thing to buy online unless you're already familiar with the brand.
So, gang, what do you think? Would you consider wearing dress shorts this fall?
