Chelsea Clinton Wedding Dress: Does Wearing Vera Wang Up the Odds of Divorce?

Chelsea Clinton looked exquisite in the Vera Wang wedding gown she wore Saturday in her marriage ceremony to Marc Mezvinsky. Oh that beaded waistline and draped bodice with a swirling silk skirt and train. Simply gorgeous!

Hope that Vera Wang wedding dress doesn't carry any bad divorce ju-ju though. After all, it seems Vera Wang dresses have been worn by more celebrity divorcees than by celebrities blessed with long-lived wedded bliss. Where will Chelsea Clinton fall?

About a month ago, proud papa Bill Clinton spoke of Chelsea and Marc's relationship to Tina Brown of the Daily Beast, "They found each other,” he said of Marc and Chelsea, “and these two, they really love each other." Aww, sounds like the two, who have been together for five years already, have a strong foundation going into their marriage.

Let's take a peek, though, at what's happened with 13 celebrity brides who also chose the talented and beloved Vera Wang to design their wedding gowns.

7 Celebrity Divorcees Who Wore Vera Wang Wedding Gowns

1. Mariah Carey

Mariah wore a $25,000 ivory-silk duchess satin Vera Wang wedding gown when she wed music manager Tommy Mottola in 1993. The marriage ended in 1998. In an odd turn of events, Mariah wore the same wedding dress again later in her 2005 video "We Belong Together."

2. Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson wore a strapless Vera Wang when she married Nick Lachey in 2002. Their reality show marriage only lasted until 2006 when they divorced.

3. Avril Lavigne

Feisty punk rocker Avril Lavigne married Deryck Whibley, singer of Sum 41, in 2006. Avril wore a floor-length satin organza Vera Wang gown with a flowing train and a long white veil. Not what we expected Avril to wear down the aisle! Sadly, the marriage ended in 2009.

4. Uma Thurman

I thought Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke were in it for the long haul when they married in 1998. She wore a Vera Wang gown in their wedding ceremony. Unfortunately, the marriage fell apart in 2004.

5. Sharon Stone

In her wedding to Phil Bronstein in 1998, Sharon Stone wore a pale pink, bias-cut chiffon gown by Wang and a diamond tiara. Probably my least favorite Vera Wang dress ever. The two divorced in 2004.

6. Elin Nordegren

In one of the most high-profile breakups this year, Elin Nordegren left her cheating husband Tiger Woods. Their marriage began, however, with her walking down the aisle in private sunset ceremony in Barbados wearing a white, sleeveless floor-length Vera Wang gown with a scooped neck. The couple are now separated and divorce is pending.

7. Kate Hudson

Another celebrity marriage I hoped would last began with a Vera Wang dress. Kate Hudson wore a strapless ivory silk duchesse satin ball gown with a hand-stitched corset bodice when she married musician Chris Robinson in 2000. They divorced in 2007.

All these divorces sure don't bode well for a marriage that kicks off with a Vera Wang bang, now does it? Is it a Vera Wang wedding gown curse?

Luckily, the curse just isn't so and hopefully will never be so for Chelsea and Marc or for Alicia Keys, who also wore Vera Wang over the weekend in her marriage to new husband Swizz Beatz. After all, there are a few celebrities who started off their marriages wearing Wang and have managed to keep their relationships in tact.

1. Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer divorced her first two husbands and broke off two other high-profile relationships -- including the called-off marriage to Ben Affleck during which time Jennifer burned a $25,000 Vera Wang wedding gown. However, J. Lo seems to have met her true match in current husband Marc Anthony. Jennifer wore a ruffled, booty-hugging Vera Wang dress in her surprise 2004 wedding to Marc and the two had twins Emme and Maximillian in 2008.

2. Victoria Beckham

Then Victoria Adams married David Beckham way back in 1999 in a Vera Wang gown with a 20-foot train, and this couple is still going strong after 11 years of marriage.

3. Sarah Michelle Gellar

Married to Freddie Prinze, Jr. since 2002, Sarah Michelle seems to have a well-built marriage. She wore a tiered lace Vera Wang dress when the couple married in Mexico.

4. Jennifer Garner

When Jennifer Garner married Ben Affleck (yep, a second chance for Ben to marry a Jennifer in a Vera Wang dress), she was four months pregnant with Violet. On the beach in Turks and Caicos, she wore a white empire waist Vera Wang gown with a green sash. The couple's been married since 2005.

And finally for two other celebrity newlyweds besides Chelsea and Alicia, it's still too soon to tell, but we'll wish them well. Maybe we can tip the scales back in favor of long-lived marriages that began with Vera Wang.
