Flickr photo by Milica SekulicWhen I was a little girl, I'd raid my grandmother's jewelry box that was filled with big costume-y pieces.
One of my favorites was her long pearl necklace.
To this day, pearls are still one of my favorite stones to wear. I have a really long pearl necklace, which I either knot or double over. I love it because it's so versatile -- I can wear it with my sophisticated summer dresses or my rock-n-roll tees.
And for June babies, this versatile gem is their birthstone. Though it's very rare to find natural pearls due to their complex creation process (an object such as a small fish or parasite gets inside a mollusk, and over the years, layers of a substance called nacre is produced covering the intruder creating a pearl), the act of culturing pearls has made these gems available to everyone.
Do you have any pearl jewelry?
