Idea: The Basket as a Handbag

I was charmed by this entry from a new style blog I'm reading called Fieldguided. In it, the author, Anabela, posts pictures of 1960s style icon Jane Birkin, carrying a basket around with her as a handbag. Check out these photos from her blog...

What a wonderful idea! Wicker and wood are so hot this season that now is the perfect time to make this unique look your own. And you can bet no one else will have your handbag.

Best of all, you might just have a handbag-sized basket like this one around the house already. I have collected antique baskets over the years to go on top of my kitchen cabinets- Here are two that would perfectly fit the bill...

On the left, a small picnic basket. On the right, an antique sewing basket. They are both about the same size as the one Jane Birkin carried.

I don't really like the idea of carrying personal things around in a basket without a lid, but with a little bit of searching around, you should be able to find something with a top that would fit the bill.

Etsy has hundreds of vintage baskets to choose from- This one is available for $23.50.

What do you think? Would you carry a small basket as a handbag, or is it too out there for you?
