dressbarn Challenge: Create Four Looks with One Wardrobe Basic

I have to admit, I've never shopped at dressbarn.

However, when the brand contacted me and offered to send out one of its wardrobe basics for me to try out, I was happy to do it. You all know full well that smart girls mix high end pieces with less expensive ones for maximum effect, and if I can add dressbarn to my search list, I'm all for it.

dressbarn sent me a basic pair of khaki pants, which retail at $29.99. My challenge was to create four different looks with the same pair of pants. Fun, right? And I figured that seeing this challenge might give you all some ideas for shopping your own closet before you spend a lot of money on the new Spring trends, since pretty much everyone owns a pair of khakis. With that in mind, here's what I came up with...

The first look could be worn just about anywhere- to work, shopping, or on a girl's night out. I rolled up the pants to mid-calf (a super easy and inexpensive way to update your pants for Spring, by the way), added an Ann Taylor cowl neck sweater (Have you noticed I end up wearing this sweater with just about everything? It was a fabulous buy), and tied a pretty satin floral belt from J. Crew around my waist. Oh, and my hair is in a side braid, of course. Love it!

For a dressier look, I wore the pants with Gucci slingbacks and a wonderful neutral-and-gold sequined shrug I just found at LOFT a few weeks ago (and highly, highly recommend- I get tons of compliments every time I wear it). I would wear this look to a casual evening party or out with friends.

For a business look, I layered a "vintage" Ann Taylor shantung shirt in mint green over a neutral tank, wore the pants at full length and finished off the look with a gorgeous pair of Prada heels. This look just screams "PTO PRESIDENT," don't you think? Heh.

I finished my challenge with a casual twist. I rolled up the pants to bermuda length, added a coral shirt, and topped it off with a black silk cardigan. Black strappy sandals keep it from getting too casual.

As for the pants themselves- They're everything you'd want from khakis. They have a little bit of stretch to them, the material is lightweight without feeling cheap, and they fit perfectly- The waistband is neither too low nor too high. If you're looking for a good pair of khakis and don't have a lot of cash to spend, these would definitely fit the bill.

If you want to check out dressbarn for yourself, here's a 20% off coupon you can print out before you go.

Have fun!

Disclosure: dressbarn sent me a pair of khaki pants and a cute pink pashmina for this review. The pashmina has so many possibilities, I think I'll do another post on ways to wear it.
