Gaultier for Target: Hot or Hyped?

If you're a follower of all things Target (and you're crazy if you're not), then you might already know that John Paul Gaultier's new line is set to debut at select Targets on March 7th (to find out if the line will appear at your own local Target, go here).

I couldn't wait to see his designs, but now that I've gotten a sneak peek, my feelings are mixed. See for yourself...

I like the trench ($59.99) and the green polka dot dress (what I can see of it, anyway), which is $34.99. I totally covet the tattoo leggings ($24.99), which are crazy cool and I would find reasons to wear them. And I like the leather jacket, although at $199.99, it's a little too high for a Target purchase, in my opinion.

This yellow halter dress is my favorite (minus the tattoo shirt) of the line, although at $59.99, I think it's high for Target. I'll have to see the fabric to decide whether it's worth it.

And I like this navy and white top with the anchor cut-out in the center. It's only $19.99 and fits right in with the nautical trend.

But the bulk of the collection is, frankly... meh. Like the pinstripes. Come on. Pinstripes? Who's into "sexy" pinstripes right now? This outfit looks like something you'd buy at Wet Seal.

He's also got a major eighties theme going in this line. Like, gag me with a spoon. That's soooo last decade.

Rodarte was tapped for the last big Target collection. I read somewhere that it sold out online in under an hour. However, I happened to go to my local Target at around the time the collection came out, and there was plenty of Rodarte in stock. Honestly, I was underwhelmed by what I saw. No designer can redeem cheap fabric, no matter how innovative or clever. For that reason, I worry the Gaultier collection is going to be much the same way- overpriced clothing made with cheap materials.

I'm intrigued, though, and I totally plan to head out to my nearest Target as soon as the line is released and see it for myself. I'll let you know what I find.

In the meantime, what do you think of Target's designer collections? Are they totally hot? Or just totally hyped?
