Help Desk: How Old is Too Old for Long Hair?

by Lindsay Ferrier on February 25, 2010 at 8:30 AM

Meet Shana.

Shana wants to know: "What is the expiration date on long hair? I am 44, and my hair is LONG. How old is too old to be sporting that look?"

My thoughts? There was a time when long hair was frowned upon on women of a certain age, but thanks to Hollywood, as long as your hair is well groomed, well-conditioned, and has some volume and oomph, I say go for it. I wouldn't let it get too long past shoulder length, but that goes for just about everyone (myself included- I am the queen of going waaaaay too long between cuts.)

Other long-haired ladies in their 40s and beyond...

Demi Moore is 47.

Michelle Pfeiffer is 51.

Sarah Jessica Parker will be 45 next month.

These women look far younger than their years and while plastic surgery may or may not have something to do with it, the long hair definitely plays a role in their youthfulness.

That said, Shana, I think you'd look nice going a couple of inches shorter, too, if you wanted to try something new without getting too drastic. Michelle Pfeiffer's hairstyle would look great on you.

What do you think, readers? Is there an expiration date on long hair?

I love long hair, and don't care about age. My hair is long, and always has been, and I'm 34. I think, however, that you definitely need to keep up with it. When the ends start looking frayed, and staw-ish, you have to get a trim, or it looks gross, no matter your age. In looking at Shana's picture, I would recommend an aggressive trim of her ends...they are looking pretty thin compared to the rest of her hair, which can make the long hair look outdated. Just my opinion.

I don't think so at all! I do agree that shoulder length would be a good look - gives it a little volume! I'm jealous of Shana - I never have the patience to let my hair grow that long!!

My hair is long and I love it - and get a lot of compliments until it gets to the unmanageable point (which is where it is now!). I don't look good in short hair plus I can go a really loooong time between cuts as long as I get a great cut to start with. And I'm 44.

One of my favorite high school teachers had long, silvering hair that was gorgeous. It made her seem younger and less fussy than some of the teachers with shorter, more involved hairstyles.

I hope there is no expiration date, because I am 57 and have just grown my hair along again. I love it because I can do so many different styles with it! I keep is streaky blonde and have it trimmed often. It's actually a little longer than the picture on my website now, but the same basic style - I'll have to update that picture!

All anyone has to do is look at that gorgeous header photo to know that there's no expiration date on long hair - look how fabulous all four of you look! Shana has great hair, thick and wavy, she would look great with some layers put in.

I agree Lindsay. BUT (there is always a but) you need to be more specific. Your long hair needs to have some semblence of a STYLE. Just because it is long, doesn't mean you ignore it. In my salon you do see woman sporting the Duggar look... and frankly it isn't all that. Your top picture is an example of what TO do.

My hair will likely always be long. It's just a touch below my shoulders but is layered. I think it suits its texture and and my round face - and it's just how I prefer it besides. I see women with short hair and I envy them because it so often looks so great but I know it really wouldn't work for me. I try not to let it go too long between trims/cuts - long doesn't need to equal sloppy or unstyled (although some days, yeah, probably. ;)) I also wear it up a lot, which is fun for me but also helps in professional situations or times when I'm a little late for a trim. I agree that if Shana took a couple of inches off and shaped it up it would look even better.

I'm 39 and planning to grow my hair out, again, to cut it off for locks of love. It will take about 3 years to grow it out again and I've been wondering how old is too old? I agree that there used to be a "stigma" back in the day. But now if you keep it maintained and styled then go for it!
