No mama worth her salt likes or enjoys seeing her baby cry, no matter if that baby is still cutting teeth or old enough to borrow $20 (and “forget” to give it back). It’s why, in a playground crowded with dozens of kids, we’re able to pick out that one distinct wail and run to the rescue of our child in distress. Maternal instinct propels us to fix whatever’s upsetting them, to soothe them, console them, make everything alright, even at the sacrifice of our own safety and comfort. That’s what we sign up for when those nine months turn into delivery room showtime, and we commit to raising the little people we produce. But that doesn’t mean it’s not OK to let a child cry it out.

  • AAP Declares Crib Bumpers Completely Unsafe

The American Academy of Pediatrics has put its foot down on parents slipping crib bumpers into baby's bed. The nation's most respected group of parenting experts has released yet another set of warnings that the soft pads do nothing but put your baby in danger. So what are the chances that parents will actually listen to the warning this time? Fifty percent? Twenty?

I'd like to put that at 100 percent, but people just seem to love them some crib bumpers. And I don't get it!  The AAP is warning that those cute, fluffy pillow-like bands can actually kill our kids. Kill. Not hurt. KILL!

  • I Stopped Co-Sleeping & Now I Can't Sleep!

Just a few weeks before her first birthday, my daughter Abby has started sleeping in the crib! This is big news, since her sister was in the Arm's Reach co-sleeper well into her second year.

Not only that, she didn’t need to nurse at all between 8 p.m., when I put her down, and 5 a.m., when she had a snack and went back to sleep for an hour.So I got a full night’s sleep too, right? Right? Wrong-o. Oh, so very, very wrongly wrong with the wrongness.

Time to go crib-shopping (again!). The government's new crib regulations are in effect, and they're a whole lot stricter than ever before. In fact, chances are the crib your baby is sleeping in now wouldn't meet the latest standards.

The biggest change in crib safety: The sale and manufacture of drop-side cribs is now banned. If you already have one, it's still legal to use it, but when you hear why the feds are cracking down on drop-side cribs you might not want to anymore.

This sweet nursery Belinda created for her baby daughter Imogen proves that it doesn't matter how much space you have when it comes to creating a chic look. Imogen's cozy nook is actually just a small corner of the master bedroom because Belinda, like many moms, wanted her baby close by for the first few months.

While it's lacking size, it certainly doesn't lack style -- I'm coveting that gorgeous cradle! See closer shots of all the charming details below.

Mom Jamie is one of those people who has their interior design style figured out. No matter what room in the house she works her magic in, it always looks effortless.

When it came time to put together a nursery for her son Hank, she went with her instincts and they didn't fail her. She gathered inspired bits around the house and re-purposed vintage finds to create this inviting space. See more of the amazing details, including a great chalkboard wall, below.

Boy do I have a beautiful nursery to share with you today and, yes, it does include stripes. I never seem to get tired of them, do you?

It should come as no surprise that this space was created by an interior designer. Lindsay Brier of Anyon Design wanted to have a fresh space for her son that wasn't overly babyish.

She achieved this by mixing modern pieces (steering clear of baby furniture collections) with some vintage finds. See more detailed photos of the nursery below.

Intense colors can be surprisingly scary to use in a room. So I'm always impressed when someone goes bold with a color palette. And this nursery from Sharon Taylor certainly delivers.

The first thing that caught my eye was definitely the green striped ceiling. Most of us think of putting pattern on the walls but as a decorator, Sharon thinks a little differently. Those stripes draw the eye up and help make sure the sparkly chandelier catches your eye. I'm sure it makes an impression to anyone walking into the room.

When I was a new mom, I had tons of fears, anxieties, worries. Okay, I've always had fears, anxieties, worries, but the arrival of the bambina brought a whole new batch. Some of them were justified (is my baby eating enough comes to mind), others were just weird. Like what if someone is visiting and overhears us talking about them on the baby monitor.

I know, straight out of a scene from a movie or book. Modern Family has used the "overhearing it on the baby monitor" shtick a couple of times. I am sure it happens in real life.

Then I found out just how dangerous baby monitors can be.

  • IKEA Crib Recall: 6 Things You Need to Know

Did you buy your baby's crib from IKEA? If so, take a few seconds (like right now) and check it over. The massive retail chain issued a recall for their SNIGLAR cribs in the U.S. and Canada. They say the bolts provided with about 26,000 of those cribs that are used to secure the mattress support are not long enough. That means the mattress could collapse and possibly trap and suffocate little ones.

If you bought a crib from IKEA, don't freak. We've got the 411 you need to know ...
