Woman Who Ran Marathon While in Labor Is Well Prepared for Parenthood

It's something few women who aren't runners know, but it's actually perfectly safe to run during pregnancy. But don't tell that to most people. They're the ones giving pregnant ladies the stink eye as we motor past them faster than they can go.

I know they're wrong, though. I ran through my entire second pregnancy safely and comfortably and I have three different running friends who ran half marathons weeks before giving birth.

Now we have all been topped by one super insane (in a good way) runner mama named Amber Miller who ran an entire marathon (26.2 miles) hours before giving birth and part of it while in labor. All hail the hardest core mama of all. That baby is going to be one tough cookie.

French Baby
Fronchies love their babies.
Babies fall out of windows. It happens. It's not good. I'm going to tell you the story of a Parisian baby who fell out a window, seven stories down, and bounced off an awning.

Let me front-load this article with the information that this baby is fine, not dead, and completely unhurt, because there is nothing I hate more than being blindsided with details of a maimed or murdered infant.

Now the magic of the story is what happened next ... after the awning bounce.

Preemie Saved By Cardboard Box

would you trade this in for a cardboard box?
A pediatrician who went to help after the earthquake in Haiti found himself desperate to save a preemie. So he made an incubator out of a cardboard box.

It was a dark and stormy night (really!), and Dr. Dennis Rosen had six women in active labor. One was a teenager who hadn’t even realized she was pregnant, and her teeny baby boy weighed 2 pounds 3 ounces at about 32 weeks gestation.

Rosen said: “Once the baby was born we dried and swaddled him and started looking for a place where he could be cared for until he was stable enough to be sent home.”

No incubators were to be found, at that hospital or any other. Another doc suggested he “MacGyver” himself an incubator. So he did.

Who: Benjamin Alan (Benji), 4 months old, son to Stephanie.

Benji was born on December 30 after two weeks of on-off labor. His birth was natural and mostly uncomplicated, though he was born with the cord wrapped around his neck. He was placed on my chest for a brief second, then I wasn't allowed to see him for the next 45 minutes while they examined him. He weighed in at 8 pounds 5 ounces and was 20 inches long.
