I think sometimes we forget the power of our bodies. But this birth story will help you remember. A Michigan woman named Lindsay was pregnant with twins that she was giving up for adoption to Julie and Mike. And for the birth of these twins, this family was going to be bonded in such a beautiful way. Surrounded by a midwife, a doula, Mike and Julie, and friends, including a photographer, the birth took place at the adoptive parents home.

A home birth of twins is amazing. I'm a mother of twins and I love hearing stories like this confirming that multiples can be born naturally. And having these beautiful babies in the home of the parents is just incredible. As the photographer Jaclyn Michele says about the birth, "It takes a village," and this story is proof.

Lindsay gave birth to these two babies in just two hours on their due date. 

Ok -- it's official. Nobody, and I do mean nobody, can be trusted anymore these days. No matter how sweet, innocent, or seemingly holy someone looks, there's always the potential that they're hiding some sort of scandalous secret.

Take for example an 80-year-old nun in Spain who just got busted for being part of a huge baby stealing ring back in the 1980s. Yes, I said a nun, and yes, I said she was stealing babies! 

Sister Maria Gomez Valbuena is her name, and she's definitely a far cry from the Sister Maria we all knew and loved in The Sound of Music. (That's the first thing that pops into my head when I think of nuns.) This Sister Maria is actually a criminal who was part of a nationwide baby snatching ring who convinced unwed and poor mothers that their newborns had died right after birth, and then went and sold the babies to adoptive families.

Good, albeit unexpected, news out of Hollywood today -- Charlize Theron is now the mother of a baby boy. 

I know! Exciting and shocking at the same time. It's such a deja vu moment back to when Sandra Bullock -- seemingly out of the blue -- became a mother, after adoptting baby Louis. Not many details are available at this time about Theron's son, though a source told Us that he is African-American and was born in the United States. Her publicist also revealed his name. 

Adoption is a beautiful thing. A family that has love to give is taking care of a baby that maybe needs some extra help. A woman who isn't able to care for her new baby can give the gift of parenthood to others. It's a system, while flawed in some ways, that's still a win-win at the end of the day. Until it totally isn't.

Like, say, if you're a new mom, and your boyfriend that you met online and his wife trick you into giving your baby to them because you signed adoption papers when you thought they were something else. Yep, then, adoption is not so hot.

Let's unpack all of this crazy, shall we?

It's hard to believe that some people believe your sexuality is indicative of what kind of parent you will be. Have you seen these horrible parents who are card-carrying members of the heterosexual crowd? So it's way overdue that Florida allowed same-sex couples to adopt children. (The ruling came in 2010.) And the first gay couple to adopt in Florida, Randy Vosburg and Nick Santamaria, have brought 7-year-old David home and into his new family. And that is one lucky little boy.

Because you won't believe the fate of other children in foster care.

When actress Katherine Heigl starts talking about adoption as though the whole world should be following that route, it sounds like a nice idea. Just imagine a world where no child went without a permanent family, no would-be parents went without a baby. And yet, what sounds good in concept never quite works out that way in the real world, does it? Not everyone can adopt ... or can they?

Adoption is a tough road even for the families who choose it. But even coming from a family full of several relatives who were adopted in, I don't think anything has driven the difficulty of the road home to me quite like the creative fundraising efforts of one North Carolina mom blogger trying to raise money to bring home her baby girl.

As if the Amy Winehouse tragedy couldn't get any more tragic, the tortured singer was in the process of adopting a 10 year old girl from the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. She had already gotten permission from the girl's parents, and prior to her death she was planning to return to the island soon to finalize the process. How sad that Winehouse had a longing to be a parent. How sad that this impoverished little girl's hopes and dreams have now evaporated. But is it any sadder than what this girl's future might have held for her if the adoption actually went through and she found herself the child of a mother with a severe addiction? Love is essential but a child needs more than that. The girl was only trading one form of misfortune for another.
