If my baby cries on car rides, I turn up the radio. Not loud enough to blow her ears, just a little louder than her. — SultryLadyBug

I've done it- I think most parents have at one point or another. In fact my last dd loved louder music with a good bass beat to it (her fav was black eyed peas, lol) and we learned that she was soothed by the music at a reasonable volume (just a bit loud).
Ummm, no. I think that a baby crying in the car is one of the worsttimes a baby can cry. If your driving you can't focus your attention on baby hardley at all ( you really should be paying attention to the road ) and even if you CAN (being in the passenger seat per say) you can't pick baby up. It's so freaking stressful.
So I can understand why a mom would turn up the music. I understand completely.
But unless your baby is soothed by it (like a PP mentioned) I think it would be somewhat cruel. Baby is literally strapped down and has no idea why the people that love it (and vice versa) are completely ignoring it. It's like the CIO method, only stepped up a notch.
I put baby cd's on and then if he cries it works, the louder baby music soothes him.
Yeah the music usually soothes her....once she hears it she stops to listen...its kinda funny. if she doesnt stop then I know something is wrong and we pull over....but we rarely have to.
DH does and it drives me CRAZY! It doesn't soothe DD and usually just makes it worse.
In the car sometimes, yes. Sometimes to soothe the baby, and sometimes because if I can't help her right then, I need to be able to concentrate on my safe driving so diffusing the crying helps a little.
yea, when my kids were babies it would help sooth them and make them be calmer and more quite- of course, I would play things like death cab for cutie and so on which are more melodic and ballads... quieter. I wouldn't do it with death metal or something.
I've done it in the car when my son was an infant- he hated the carseat, and as soon as the car stopped moving he would wail. This was really stressful when we got stuck in traffic! I would turn the music up to give me something else to focus on... I couldn't concentrate on my driving if all I could hear was him shrieking- I would end up teary and shaky and would leak milk all over my shirt, it wasn't pretty! LOL!
Well if it soothes the baby then go for it. Whatever works.
If it's just to drown them out and it makes them cry more, then that's pretty craptastical.
if your baby can see you, and hear you in any form, it is NOT the CIO method. the baby being "strapped down"...yeah its a carseat lol and rather than have mom drive off the road trying to turn to sooth baby, if a lil music gets everyone home safely and a lil quicker...heck yeah do it. I drive ont he freeways and sometimes it is impossible to pull over, not a chance for a long stretch. that radio is the only thing I have to keep me focused, or I would lose it. and guess what? My son is just fine. :o)
