It's hard being a new mom (or even an experienced mom to a new baby) and sometimes we do things we know we shouldn't, despite what all the experts say. But this is a safe place to share your secrets—we won't tell.
This Week's Secret:
I put cereal in my baby's bottle. I know the doctors advise against it nowadays but I did it with my first when he was two months old and he was fine, and I plan on doing it again with my next one. — anonymous

I "experimented" with cereal in my son's milk to see if it would help his reflux, at my doctor's suggestion, but it didn't, so I stopped doing it.
I've done it, and may do it again- but my doc isn't against it really though he does urge caution. My grandmother taught me how to do it, and it worked like a charm, baby slept for longer periods, I got to shower and rest. But I only did it with my first, it wasn't necessary with the others because they weren't as ravenous, lol.
I'm just going to give a resounding "NO."
No one should unless told to be a GASTROINTESTINAL SPECIALIST, not a general doctor or their mother-in-law.
i agree w/ rana.
i didn't ff, but my son still received a bottle of bm while i was at school and we would never put cereal in a bottle. it is a major choking hazard!!
this is one of those I never did and never would but I don't care if you do or did topics I try to stay out of lol, for some reason it seems to generate the same drama as FF/BFing etc
I'm with Rana. It's proven that it doesn't help them sleep or "feel full" or any of the other excuses, so why would you even do it? It's not even necessary for babies with reflux and used as a last resort. My son had severe reflux and it was treatable with medication, we never had to put cereal in his bottle. Ugh.
I tried it with my son but it didn't help him sleep any longer. My SIL said she'd done it with her three, so I tried. He ate it just fine - but he didn't sleep longer. I don't know how it would be a choking hazard? Unless you're not putting enough water in with it? Because it should still be pretty runny to have to go through a nipple on a bottle....it's not like they're eating unsupervised...I hope.
Now with my daughter, she was spitting up a lot after eating so I tried the Enfamil A.R. and it's just a thicker formula - almost like putting cereal in with their regular formula. She seems to be able to eat somewhat thickened formula just fine.
We did under the advice of our peditrician because my son was eating 10+oz at a feeding. It helped with his hunger, which was the objective. It never made him sleep any longer.
no no no! i had two friends who did it and both did because their drs told them to!
And the babies died!
why you ask?
because it got caught in their lungs and formed a paste
causing air to shut out and the babies died from not being able to breath
There is NO reason you should do it at all
NONE
