Earlier this week I wrote a post about a World Breastfeeding Week world record, designed partly to promote the idea that breastfeeding in public is perfectly natural and acceptable.
Today I came across 6 Tips for New Moms Who Want to Breastfeed in Public at The Daily Green. It had some great tips for how to breastfeed discreetly, you know, when you're just not comfortable "whipping it out" in public. That was me, Miss Self Conscious. Coulda used these tips back then!
Here are some of them, common sense for the well practiced but a good primer for the newbies among us ... click the full 6 Tips piece for the rest. And join the Breastfeeding Moms group for the ultimate advice and support.
- Retrofit some shirts or invest in nursing specific tops that allow enough entry for you to snake a hand in to open your nursing bra or tank and then offer a breast to a babe.
- Post a message on your local parenting message board asking where other moms go to breastfeed. Knowing other parents are comfortable nursing in specific stores or restaurants will make you feel more comfortable doing it yourself.
- Invest in some nursing specific cover-ups or shawls or even the MoBoleez modern bonnet, which looks like a giant wide brimmed hat for the baby that covers your breasts.
I tried my hardest to schedule my nursing time when I was home. That happened to be a lot since I was always exhausted and never wanted to go out. Even after breastfeeding two babies I never did get the "bra strap-latch-coverup" trick quite right. A whole diner full of people will back me up on that.
Are you shy about breastfeeding in public? Do you try to schedule your nursing times for when you are home or in the car? Ever have any "revealing" moments?
