I'm almost 5'1". Short, in other words.
And when I had babies, I had a similar problem as CafeMom mommyajay, who can't reach over the crib's side railing to lay her baby down in the crib now that the mattress is in the lowest position.
Now, mommyajay has a convertible crib bed, on which the side railing doesn't drop down. Our crib had a drop-down side, but I could never drop it down without waking the baby. Or the times I did remember to drop it down when baby last woke, I woke the baby raising it up (the sucker wasn't real easy to raise or lower; it took a knee and some force).
*sigh* Now what?
I wanted to bring up this little issue here on Baby Buzz because I'm sure some of you have had this problem. Maybe some of you even found a great solution. I think I did a lot of gentle baby dropping. This only worked though because my boys liked sleeping for the most part. This is a nightmare if your baby wakes easily or is impossible to get to sleep in the first place.
Some suggestions from other CafeMoms so far were:
- Use a small, sturdy stool that slides under the crib
- If you're in the market for a crib, buy one with a easy-to-slide drop side or a Babee Tenda converting crib, which has a side door that opens so you can put baby down easily
Do you have a hard time reaching down to lay your baby in his/her crib? What do you do about it?

I think the stool is a great idea. Cribs without drop down sides are SO much safer. We didn't realize this however until my son was about 2 when we bought one with no drop down side. Obviously putting a toddler who can stand alone into a crib like that is much easier than a baby but still...I am 5'2 and if I need to wake my son up and get him from a laying down position I have to have my husband do it because I can't reach!
With DD, we never used a crib, she was in a pack & play until we moved her into a toddler bed, which made things much easier.
But with DS, he's been in a crib since birth, and the fact that I couldn't reach to lay him gently wasn't an issue when he was a newborn, because he slept like a rock! But now that he's almost a year old, he wakes up almost everytime I lay him down, so I try to make sure I'm holding him in my hands (not on my arms) and reach as far as I can before letting him roll onto the bed.
Lol and I thought I was the only one! Never thought of the stool idea, but thats fantastic, may have to try it the next time around.
I am also 5'1" and I never could lay my baby in his crib! He eventually started sleeping with us anyway so that took care of that!
I'm 4'11'' so I understand the problem maybe even a little more then the other moms. LOL
Got to love being short! ha ha When my son was first born we had him in a bassinet which was great and made it simple to get him in and out of. For now I just use the tips of my fingers and get on my tip toes. LOL
I haven't found anything great that works, I try to put him down before he falls a sleep so he can kind of help me get himself down. Our crib isn't even in lowest position yet, I'm not too sure what I'll do when it is!! :-) "wink"
I don't have that issue lol. Although my son was born a preemie he is a little giant now. He is tall and chubby so is easy to grab him from anywhere. I'm have also a medium height 5'4 so it help a lot too. The only that does bother me is that he is chubby and my back is all mess up from the spinal during the c-section.
My husband is always joking with me about how short I am. He's 5'11 and I am 5'2. It never bothered me before until I had my son. It is so hard to reach him if he is in the corner of the crib now that it is on the lowest setting. I never realized how deep cribs were before I had my son.
Well this problem impacts me twice.
I am 6'3 and its hard on my back and I have to bend so far to get him down into his crib.
Then when i am in my wheelchair i cant get him in and out easily.
I could never afford one of those cribs with a door, and the dropside cribs just arent safe, just look at all the recalls
My son has a crib from IKEA
I'm 5' even. And I kinda just deal with it, lol.
It gets easier with practice, I guess.
I have used a stool, works great!
Also, have at times, handed baby over to hubby to put him in crib (he's taller than I).
Lastly, our son stopped wanting to be rocked to sleep early on - prefering to lay down on his own with bottle. He puts himself out very well! What an angel!!!!!!
