Breastfeeding and Breast Cancer: What You Should Know

10

breastfeeding and breast cancerMy mom is a breast cancer survivor so I'm of the mind-set that it's not a matter of if, but when, I'll be diagnosed with the disease. Although, I just heard some pretty encouraging news. We all know that breastfeeding is good for our babies and good for our hearts. You might also know that women who breastfeed have a lower risk of osteoporosis, ovarian cancer, and low blood pressure. Now new research shows something about breastfeeding and breast cancer that has even the researchers amazed.

A new report shows that breastfeeding is associated with a lower incidence of breast cancer among women who are at particularly high risk: those who have a history of breast cancer in their family.

Specifically, the report found that among women with an immediate relative (a mother or a sister) who had breast cancer, those who breast-fed had a 59 percent lower risk of premenopausal breast cancer.

"I was sort of stunned," said Dr. Alison M. Stuebe, one of the researchers on the study who is an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of North Carolina.

Dr. Stuebe even suggested that breastfeeding might prove to be just as effective a strategy for women at a high risk of breast cancer as Tamoxifen (a drug that is often used to reduce a woman's breast cancer risk).

Has anyone in your immediate family had breast cancer? Do you breastfeed?

I am of the same mind set as you, Suzanne. Unfortunately, my mother lost her battle with it when I was 15. She was just 43.  I am just 7 years from the age she was when she was originally diagnosed (37).  I am encouraged by the recent studies about breastfeeding!! I did breastfeed both of my boys for over a year.

I'm hoping that with constant screening, early detection, and new treatments out there that I will beat it if/when it strikes!

Amazingly no, no woman in my family has had breast cancer, but they were all exclusive bfders, my grandma BF 8 of here kids, my mom all five of hers.

On a side note, my mother in law who FF had her own battle with it. Not sure if there is a correlation with it, but what a fantastic reason to push threw and breastfeed!

Studies are also showing the longer you breastfeed (whether it's 5 kids nursing for one year each, totalling 5 years, or one kid nursing until they were 5), the lower your risk as well.

Nature truly is amazing in that it designed bf'ing to have health benefits for both mom and baby.  There is no strong family history of breast cancer in my family but I did breastfeed- between my three kids I can probably log about five years of bf'ing.  I'm glad I was able to do something healthy for my kids and healthy for myself as well!

I breastfeed, and have all my babies...
I also have alot of breastcancer in my family.
Funny thing is...the ones who have it in my family are non-breastfeeders.

I have been screaming this from the rooftops for years.

The benefits for breastfeeding and especially extended breastfeeding, are enormous and really a shame that people in North America are jipping themselves out of.

Including preventing brain cancers (in both mother and child...)... chrohns disease....and a myriad of other health issues. (Scientific Facts!)

They are even using breastmilk in cancer treatment --- yeah it's that good.

Really my first thought on this was "duh who doesn't know this"  but the more information out there the better.  Sadly some, mostly those who FF, won't believe this ever.  So far I have a collected 50 months of BF from my three kids, the youngest of which is still nursing and will self wean.

No breast cancer in my family yet, but I'm glad I have a lower chance of getting it anyway!
