Moms can learn to recognize and differentiate between their baby's various cries. Or, they can pay $100 to have the Why Cry Baby Analyzer do it for them.
How does it work exactly?
I have no earthly idea.
According to the Web site, the monitor uses "advanced frequency analysis technology" to determine whether your baby is crying because she/he is:
- Stressed
- Sleepy
- Annoyed
- Bored
- Hungry
Impressive? Maybe.
This review of the Why Cry Baby Analyzer from CrunchGear.com made me laugh:
"...One thing’s for sure, though, only the “hungry” setting really necessitates any serious action. If I were a parent, I’d be a bit put off by a “bored” reading. Oh, you’re bored? You sit around and consume resources all day without recontributing to the family’s economic bottom line. Shall I turn on the Teletubbies for you? High definition or standard? Oh my, you’re annoyed? I’ll try to be more quiet when getting ready in the morning. You’ve got a long day of crapping your pants and sleeping, after all. My apologies!"
What do you think? Would you invest in this baby monitor or would you prefer to "analyze" your baby's cries on your own?

I think I'm a much better judge of what my baby needs than some machine. I would hate for some poor kid to go with out what he/she needs for longer because someone was listening to a machine with no knowledge of the individual child!
I'm thinking the same as hillmom; I'd hate to have to go off of a machine to know what my babies needs are; I wouldn't feel like a mom, more like a robot that's going off of a program that's telling me whats wrong with my baby instead of me just knowning, or willing to figure it out on my own. Plus I can spend 100 dollars on something much better :)
Hopefully it's ONLY for entertainment purposes, and people wouldn't ACTUALLY try to parent by it. Besides, they didn't even include one of the main reasons babies cry - gas/attempting to poop, and wanting to be held.
It's a sad day when maternal instincts need to be replaced by a machine!
you're joking right. what a waste of money
This makes me laugh every time I see it. I wonder if it has little settings for "the sun is in my eyes" or "holy crap dad you stink take a shower beore you pick me up."
I guess this was born from the "helping ease anxious new mothers" market but I've never met a mother who was THAT anxious.
Oh, it's from Think Geek. That explains a lot. :)
Yes, PLEASE give me yet ANOTHER product to take the parenting job from me! Without these things, I have NO idea how parents survived their children. Between the bottle holders and this, I'm not sure why my baby needs me around. Just the way I like it. ::snort::
I think that if it was a learning machine - it would analyze the cry and then you tell it what calmed baby and it analyzed the different cries over a week or two that it could be pretty cool. It's not going to soothe your baby for you, but if it gives your baby faster relief, I don't see the harm in it.
I didn't really, truly learn to distinguish all of my son's multitude of different cries 'til he was at least 6 months old. If this could have saved me 4 of those months of going through the checklist "diaper, food, cuddles, sleeps, check for scratchy tags...dear G-d why are you crying????" then I'm all for it! Hell, if it even limits the list to just "things that annoy baby at any given moment" then I'm all for it!
THIS IDEA WAS STOLEN!!! Homers brother from the Simpsons invented it YEARS AGO!!!!! and thats all ive got to say about that.
