What Kind of Song is that to Sing to a Baby?

No one could put poor Humpty

back together!

Mr. Cafe Suzanne and I are hoping to raise our daughter to be bilingual so we've bought her a lot of French music. Many of the songs have been sung to babies in France for generations, and my husband grew up hearing them. But after singing them to our daughter recently, he was a bit taken aback.

One song is about sailors that run out of food and are going to eat the cabin boy so he tries to hang himself. Another is about a girl who is happily skipping about until she meets some officers who make fun of her and call her trash for wearing clogs. Huh?

And when you think about it, the songs and nursery rhymes in the U.S. aren't any cheerier. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall and couldn't be put back together, Jack and Jill tumbled down a hill, Rock-a-bye baby falls out of a tree, Little Bo Peep lost her sheep and finds their tails hung out to dry, a spider scares Miss Muffet, and so on. Not really the kind of stories that will inspire sweet dreams as your little one drifts off to sleep.

I grew up hearing all of these songs and I don't think it did any damage to my psyche (then again, who knows), and I have sung all of them to my daughter. But still, why such dark themes in songs written for babies?

What songs do you sing your baby? Why do you think traditional nursery rhymes aren't all sweet and sunny?

I, too have felt that kids songs are pretty twisted. But rockabye baby is still the #1 bedtime song sang at our house. Even my 6yo still wants to hear it once in a while, and she's old enought to get the lyrics!

While my daughter was about 2-3 months old I discovered she liked Christmas hymns. (It was Decemeber of 07, just if you were curious) She seemed to like O, Little Town of Bethlehem, It Came Upon The Midnight Clear, and What Child is This? the best.

Her granddaddy also started singing Baby Beluga to her when she was very young but changed 'beluga' to her name (alaina) Even now that one is a hit. It also helped her learn her name.

I never sing nursery rhymes for some reason. I never have. I sing the music I usually listen to (if it's appropriate..) like Happy Together by The Turtles and Oh Dear by Matt Costa. My daughter has been running around the house lately going I TINK 'BOUT YOU DAY AND NIGHT, IZ ONLY RIGHT TO TINK 'BOUT DA ONE YOU WUV N HOLD HER TIGHT, SO HAPPY TOGETHER. I think it's cute!

I sing songs that have special meaning to me, like Yellow by Coldplay, or Your song by Elton John.  We also play classical music for our son, which now he loves playing on his toy piano and he tries to hum some of the songs too..

I was never really big on lullabyes in general.  I sing whatever music is in my head at the time.  The downfall to that is that I watch a lot of anime, so my daughter has become accustomed to hearing Yoko Kanno songs.

I'm french, I discovered "rockabye baby " lullaby in the movie "The Goonies". I thought this lullaby was create especially for the ugly and stupid monster in this movie.
I was chocked when i learned few years ago that it's a common nursery rhymes that many moms sing to their children in English speaking country.

It's true that i sang myself "Le petit Navire" to my children. This is the song about sailors that run out of food and are going to eat the cabin boy. But this is a good song, because the cabin boy ask God for help and then fishes jump into the boat!

This bugs me, too, and while we are at it, what is it with Disney movies and something always happening to the mom/parents?  Seems that the kid is always either separated from one or both parents - if they are alive at all.

it goes like this...

IT'S TIME TO GO TO SLEEP

IT'S TIME TO GO TO SLEEP

LAY YOUR HEAD DOWN, AND CLOSE YOUR EYES

IT'S TIME TO GO TO SLEEP BABY, IT'S TIME TO GO TO SLEEP

IT'S TIME TO GO TO SLEEP BABY, IT'S TIME TO GO TO SLEEP

GOODNIGHT.....GOODNIGHT

I can't tell ya how the melody goes, but my daughter has always loved it...and tries to sing along, and it works every time..she knows it's sleepytime!
