Trying for Twins? Here's How to Have Them

things to do to have twinsI know I've said it before, but I've always wanted twins. That's why I'm thinking about moving. To Brazil. There's a little farming town there that has an unusually high concentration of twins—right now there are 38 sets of twins among the 80 families that live in a one-and-a-half square-mile area.

Some of the locals think it has to do with the drinking water, but geneticists disagree even though they haven't been able to come up with a more scientific solution (but they suspect it has to do with genetic isolation and inbreeding). Still, there's been a recent decline in twin births since the town switched from drinking spring water to drinking underground well water. So maybe it is something in the water after all. But since I can't afford the plane ticket, I did some research and found there are some other things I can do to increase my chances of having twins:

1. Eat Yams. The Yoruba Tribe in West Africa has the highest rate of twinning in the world. A study found that the mother's diet was the reason. Many of the women there eat a kind of yam that contains a chemical that causes hyperovulation.

2. Drink milk. A 2006 study found that women who consume a lot of dairy in their daily diet are five times likelier to have twins as non-dairy eaters.

3. Breastfeed. Many people are under the impression that you can't even get pregnant while breastfeeding, but there is research to support the theory that women who conceive while breastfeeding have a greater chance of having twins.

4. Gain weight. Women who are heavier (have a body mass index of 30 or higher) are more likely to have twins.

5. Wait a few more years. Older women also have more twins—17 percent of moms over 45 have multiples (without undergoing IVF).

Have you ever tried to make yourself conceive twins somehow—herbs, acupuncture, eating yams, drinking milk? Did it work? If you have twins, what do you think the reason was?

I have PCOS, which can cause issues with lack of ovulation, or hyper-ovulation.  My best friend has twins from ovulating twice due to her PCOS.  When I got pregnant and was incredibly ill, people kept teasing that it was twins, and I was petrified it might be!  Fortunately, it wasn't.

I love the question- I hear it all the time. How did you get twins? My husband likes to answer "I'm a stud!" The truth is we have them in the family. Triplets, actually. I likely release mutliple eggs during my cycle.  i don't recommend ANYONE try for twins.  They are a lot of fun, but there is something to be said for enjoying one day at a time, one drink at a time, one kid at a time, etc.

Well, we sure didn't TRY for twins, but here I am, pregnant with 2 girls. Had nothing to do with overovulating though, they're identical, so it was just sheer chance and nothing to do with genetics :)

I didn't do any of that and I got a set of twins by shear luck. I think honestly it is geneics or luck of the draw. I don't know why on earth someone would actually attempt to try to have twins, you should honestly just hope for a healthy baby.

twins are all over in my dads side of the family, does that mean that i could have twins i sure would like a set so that i dont have to get pregnant twice.  i have four kids and would like a total of six, but after having to emergency c-sections and two preemies back to back i would like just to get pregnant one time but get two babies..

My husband likes to claim he's extra special too and jokes about the fact that I would elevate my legs after sex because we tried to get pregnant for about 6 months before accomplishing the task. But when it's all said and done mine are identical so it was just a freak of nature.

I wish there was a trick though because I'd love to have a set of twins boys to go along with my set of twin girls. :-)

I got twins due to hyperovulation due to cysts.  I don't wish twins on anyone.  They are a challenge the first year unless you have a lot of support, which I didn't.

I got pregnant with twins when my sons was 3 months old.  They say if you conceive shortly after a pregnancy, then there's more of a chance for twins.  You have more of chance of ovulating more than one egg.  My twins are boys, fraternal.  One is blonde, one is brunette.  One is small and fair, the other is sturdy and dark.  I have 3 boys under 2.

Who would try for twins?!  It's cute and fun, but the first few months are so crazy.

I am a twin. There are no other known twins in my entire family! HA! So, there goes genetics! LOL!

I haven't tried for twins... yet... DH doesn't want more than one at a time and jokingly says we'll have to put one up for adoption if it happens.

I conceived twins with both of my pregnancies.  Both times, one twin did not develop and was reabsorbed between six and eight weeks gestation.  I must be one of those "lucky" ones that often releases more than one egg during ovulation.

I have nothing against twins, but I am very glad I never had them.  One at a time is more than enough for me and I just don't know how I'd be able breastfeed, co-sleep, and wear two babies at the same time.  It would be very physically draining.
