Trying for Twins? Here's How to Have Them

34

things to do to have twinsI know I've said it before, but I've always wanted twins. That's why I'm thinking about moving. To Brazil. There's a little farming town there that has an unusually high concentration of twins—right now there are 38 sets of twins among the 80 families that live in a one-and-a-half square-mile area.

Some of the locals think it has to do with the drinking water, but geneticists disagree even though they haven't been able to come up with a more scientific solution (but they suspect it has to do with genetic isolation and inbreeding). Still, there's been a recent decline in twin births since the town switched from drinking spring water to drinking underground well water. So maybe it is something in the water after all. But since I can't afford the plane ticket, I did some research and found there are some other things I can do to increase my chances of having twins:

1. Eat Yams. The Yoruba Tribe in West Africa has the highest rate of twinning in the world. A study found that the mother's diet was the reason. Many of the women there eat a kind of yam that contains a chemical that causes hyperovulation.

2. Drink milk. A 2006 study found that women who consume a lot of dairy in their daily diet are five times likelier to have twins as non-dairy eaters.

3. Breastfeed. Many people are under the impression that you can't even get pregnant while breastfeeding, but there is research to support the theory that women who conceive while breastfeeding have a greater chance of having twins.

4. Gain weight. Women who are heavier (have a body mass index of 30 or higher) are more likely to have twins.

5. Wait a few more years. Older women also have more twins—17 percent of moms over 45 have multiples (without undergoing IVF).

Have you ever tried to make yourself conceive twins somehow—herbs, acupuncture, eating yams, drinking milk? Did it work? If you have twins, what do you think the reason was?

My neighbor always joked with my mom that it was because they had sex twice the night that my brother and sister were conceived :)

I would never wish a twin pregnancy on my worst enemy...having said that I love my twins and wouldnt trade them for the world...they were and are not as hard to care for as everyone said they would be, but to try for twins??? off your rocker...

My sister and me both have twins..hers are 3 and a half months younger than mine. They didn't run in the family and the only explanation was we were both over 30. I hadthe worst pregnancy, hers was a breeze. Besides having a bad time being pregnant, I love having twins. They really were not harder, and some ways easier than one. Fun for Grandma, lol, she has 4 grandsons all the same age!!!

i concieved twins two out of 3 pregnancies, but never carried both past the 2month mark. But i have had three healthy children.. we are planning on another pregnancy, and this time I want my twins.. any advise? I cant eat yams and fertility is not  a problem so I don't think I need fertility pills. Any suggestions. By the way I am a nurse but I'm a small hospital nurse not a baby or fertility specialist. when I asked my fcp she says to harvest my eggs. I don't understand..

My fiance always jokes that our lives are going to imitate that of the Sim family I made of us, and Sim me had twins after her first son (already on track with the son part).  So he always says whenever I talk about the next pregnancy that it'll be twins!  I certainly hope that life won't imitate our video game art though because me, him, and one of the twins died in a horrible macaroni and cheese fire!  (I am certain he will ban me from making mac and cheese if by some chance I do have twins...)

I am a twin, but my twin sister died in the womb. I have twins all over on both sides of my family. My mother's twin also died in the womb. I have no idea if this plays any significance or if it was just plain bad luck, but I have read that the twin gene is carried down through the maternal side of the family. I am one of those women that would actually love to have twins, but I wouldn't go so far as to use fertility drugs to conceive them. My firstborn was not a twin.

I have 6 year old b/g twins, and that rock my world. I would stay away from yams and Brazil. Stay far, far away. You should borrow a set of twins at all different stages. You can use mine to see wha5 it is like in the just starting school, have a mind of their own, backtalking, know it all stage. You'll be ready to tie your tubes just to make sure you don't have a set. Don't get me wrong, I love my kids more than anything. I even stay home with them. My recommendation is to let nature take it's course. I am a firm believer that twins and multiples are not meant for everyone. Pray for a healthy baby instead or wishing for two.
