Did Having a Baby Make You Hate Your Dog?

new babies make people hate their pets

This cutie makes me want a dog even more!

Cafe Kristen just got a puppy and I'm totally jealous. I'd love to get a Bernese Mountain Dog, but right now I don't have any pets. I've heard that sometimes having a new baby and a new dog (or an old dog) can be complicated—for the dog, for the baby, and probably for the parents too! But most people have no problem working it all out. One thing I've never heard: After having a baby, some new parents start hating their pets.

"The moment my child entered my world, there was no more room in it for my dog ... this is the hate that dare not speak its name." (From an article in Time magazine.)

"We had been warned that the pets would get the shaft once the baby becomes the focal point of your existence. What I was not prepared for was the depth of my hatred for beings I once claimed to love, and how quickly the switch happened." (From Babble.com)

Huh? Since I'm pet-less, I haven't been in this situation, but I don't understand why there isn't enough love to go around. Am I missing something?

If you do have a dog, and you're not feeling that same pre-baby love, there's a book you might consider turning to before you turn out your dog: And Baby Makes Four: A Trimester-by-Trimester Guide to a Baby-Friendly Dog. It's not too late to read it even though your baby is already here.

Do you have pets? Did you still love them after your baby joined your family? If not, why do you think that is?

I've had 2 kids since we adopted our 1st dog. We have a 2nd dog by way of my MIL that I am not fond of. She was supposed to be here temporarily during MIL's chemo treatments but MIL has been in remission for 3yrs and the dog is still here?!

I guess it's possible to hate your dog-if your CRAZY!! Seriously!! I had 2 dogs before our baby and they were my furry babies before I had a real one. I still love them dearly!

I don't hate my dog.  However my husband recently adopted a Basenji.  We didn't know his breed till we took him to the vet and it was confirmed. If you have ever wanted to see something CLOSE to the Tazzmanian Devil, look it up.  He has an awesome personality. But OMG, Destruction is playtime all the time.

I had 3 before the baby and still have the 3 now. I love them like I love my daughter, although I do seems to yell at them to get out from under my feet more often. Probably because now I am a stay at home mom and used to work. They seem more attached to  me and my daughter. They love her and kiss her,and they get upset with me when she cries! No love lost here.

I was raised with dogs. We've always had breeds that are good with children, like labs. From what I understand, there was never an issue between me and my sisters and the dog.

I don't know but every since I had my baby, my male taco bell dog squirts any where he can in the house.  I am so fed up with it I don't know what to do.  I am really beginning to "despise" him.  Maybe some of you have some tips to stop this.

We have two cats, and while I don't hate them, our relationship has definitely changed.  They were my babies before, but now I just don't have as much time for them.  Since I now need to seize every minute of sleep I can, it drives me nuts when the one does his hardcore snuggle routine and keeps me awake: kitty goes on the floor.  Oftentimes when I'm nursing they'll come into the nursery and mess with stuff (or fight).  I know they want attention, but I can't do much about it when I'm feeding a baby!

I think things are getting better, though.  As my son grows I'm able to give them a little more time, since he's less dependent on me.  Hopefully they'll all be able to play together soon and things will get back to the way they were. :)

i found myself short tempered with our dogs while i was pregnant... i hated that they would go crazy and jump on my big belly when i came home and i snapped at them quite a few times.  but i dont hate my dogs.  not at all

Love for all my babies in this house..My 3 human kids (4 counting my hubby lol) and my 2 fur babies.  I just had my 3rd baby 3 months ago.  Yes having a 2 & 1 yr old an a 3 month old, and a 3 year old pitbull/boxer mix and a 9 month old Saint Bernard can be stressful but I love it!
