Should Women Who Can't Afford Them Have Babies?

should women who can't afford them have babies octuplets

Should you have to be
rich to have kids?

By now you probably know that Nadya Sulman, the 33-year-old California woman who gave birth to octuplets, is single and unemployed. She lives with her parents, and she underwent fertility treatments to get pregnant. In addition to the eight babies she had last week (and plans to breastfeed), she has six other kids ages 2 to 7. But Sulman has big plans.

She hopes to start a career as a television childcare expert. And according to the Times of London, she's already trying to get two million dollars for television interviews (with Oprah and Diane Sawyer) and commercial endorsements. Her publicist says she's getting offers for book deals, reality shows, magazine interviews, and documentaries. Any money Sulman makes would go toward supporting her kids.

Normally, when someone gives birth to multiples, companies shower them with free gifts—diapers, baby food, even SUVs. But so far this mom isn't getting anything (which means neither are her babies). The news that Sulman is a single mom who had fertility treatments after she already had six kids at home seems to be turning people off.

Without money from interviews and free gifts from corporations, Sulman, who was already feeling crunched financially (she filed for bankruptcy in 2007), will feel it even more with eight little babies—unless of course one of those potentially lucrative deals works out. This prompted lilsugar to ask "Should Women Have Babies When They Can't Afford Them?"

What do you think? Should Sulman have had these babies if she couldn't afford them? Is it a good idea to put her kids on TV or in a documentary to make money to support them?

It is a free country.  I never want to think that someone could say 'no you can not have this child cause you are poor.'  But on the other hand, did we as taxpayers pay for her treatment or did her parents?  Or maybe she was employed prior to her delivery?

this is an issue of human rights vs. social responsibility.

women SHOULD be able to have as many children as they choose. Women SHOULD NOT choose to have more children than they can support on their own.

It's ONE thing to have a surprise pregnancy or two (trust me, two of my kids weren't planned) BUT she had them all at once...not to mention she had 6 already. She HAS to have something wrong upstairs. I'm sorry, but I agree with the people who donate things. I would not be giving my stuff away wether it be cars, clothing, money, etc. to a woman like this. She seems to have the ego Kate Gosselin has NOW.

No! Especially if she is going to end up on public support....meaning that we pay the bill. However, now that the babies are here, I hope that something comes through for their sake.

personally I feel she should  have to deal with the kids on her own....get a job don't depend on govt assistance, the kids could always go to foster care and be adopted out...that might actually be alot better for the childrens welfare.....but I don't think she needs to be rewarded with BIG money for her stupidity.......

Do you really think that's the answer is adoption? That is NOT the answer to everyones problem when times get tough with raising kids. I do think she needs to go out there and support them but adopting out all those babies? Chances are they'd be separated because who the hell can take in 8 babies at once? Or who has the financial means? I don't doubt this woman loves her children, but to scream adoption everytime things go wrong is just well, WRONG.

i think the real question is, how was she able to afford fertility treatments?
or, psychologically, why would a single woman who already has 6 children at (her parent's)home, want to have more children?

this woman's story isn't really comparable to that of the average woman and yet some are using this situation to point fingers at others, claiming that some women shouldn't have children because of how low their income may or may not be.
i'm sorry but i think that sort of thinking is unamerican or worse, inhuman.

I could afford the child but not the treatments to have the child! This is an extreme case this woman already has children! 6 of them! What in the world is she going to do with 8 more?????? I don't think think that a limit should be put on how many kids a family has but I think that they should be responsible and be able to support the children they bring in this world. I do know from experience that fertility treatments can be financed, oh yeah there are companies that do it! LOL But in the end it just seemed messed up to "finance" your babies since I already couldn't afford over $7000 per treatment with NO guarantees!  Thats just crazy ( to me anyway!) I understand if you have the money spending it this way, I would just to have a child but  I just cant get my mind around this woman! Nor the ethical situation the DR. put himself in! Craziness just Craziness!

I don't think there should be a limit on how many children you have BUT I think that if you are not financially stable enough you shouldnt try. Accidents happen and you can't help that BUT like I said, if you can't support them dont try and have them until you think you can.

I just think its weird and sad. Those poor children.

i think there are a lot of sweet families who can't have children at all (not even through our technological advances) who are feeling pretty crappy about what this woman has done. to bring children into an environment where she cannot possibly take care of them. it's irresponsible and dangerous to those poor babies.
